HAVEN DISTRO UPDATE

"Wait, what happened to the July newsletter?" some of you may be asking.  After we got home from San Diego we found ourselves swamped.  I forced myself to take a deep breath and a couple steps back.  I've talked a lot in interviews and posts about sticking to our slow steady growth business plan.  But this step back is to get a running start for our first big jump.

CBIA forum lurkers might have seen the news that Haven Distributors is moving to a bigger warehouse.  It's still in Chicagoland, just going 15 minutes or so north to Skokie.  The reason for the movie is we're tripling our storage and office capacity.  That means more room to organize the inventory better, run the order fulfillment operation more efficiently, and most importantly to bulk up our stock.

Customers are placing bigger orders, which means deeper inventory -- and bigger POs. They are also looking for more publishers, which means broader inventory at the same time.  In the old space we couldn't do both.  Now we can.  Well... in October we can.  That's when we'll make the move.

I met a lot of great new suppliers at Wizard World Chicago and San Diego.  Most were at least marginally familiar with Cold Cut, some are brand new.  And of course Enemi Entertainment is bringing in a few new faces, too.

In August look for (more) product lines from Suicide Girls, Ape Entertainment, Eagle One Media, SQP Inc, JMG Comics, Big City Comics, Heavy Metal, Last Gasp, Arcana Studio, Jester Press, the whole Antidote Trust... and honestly, way more than I can easily list here.  Just keep checking the cart.

PUBLISHER SPOTLIGHT

Continuing our spotlight on publishers, this month we bring you Red Eye Press, the publishing imprint of comic creator Daniel Cooney.

Daniel Cooney has worked in comic art and illustration since 1997. Cooney has done all aspects of producing comic books and graphic novels -- writing, penciling, inking, coloring, lettering, and book design, all the way through pre-press for publication. A lifelong fan of comics, Cooney graduated with a BFA from New York's School of Visual Arts in 1998. His client list includes illustration/graphic design work for Lucas Film LTD, NBC/Universal, Topps Entertainment, UpperDeck Cards, Rittenhouse Archives, Rolling Stone, Sony, Tower Records, Marvel Trading Cards, and Image Comics, along with writing and illustrating his own stylish action comic thriller, Valentine, under the Red Eye Press imprint.

Cooney currently lives in the San Francisco Bay area, where he teaches a few classes on-site at the Academy of Art University, writes online classes for the University, and stays busy with a variety of freelance and comic work. He lives with his ravishing and industrious wife, Carolina, and their two quirky black cats, Shorty Do Wop and Greenly Beans.

Valentine began with issue one in 1997 and currently has twelve issues and three graphic novels published. It was originally published as a 'zine in 1996 before becoming a comic book.

No matter how hard she tries, Valentine just can't leave the killing game behind. Her life as an assassin has made her a liability to everyone she's ever known -- and the lingering mental effects of the CIA's MkUltra program have clouded her memory, making her past a puzzle waiting to be pieced together.

Could a trip to Valentine's hometown be the key to unlocking her memories? With a broken spirit and a bruised body, Valentine limps home to uncover a past that may be her only hope for a future. In a world where it's kill or be killed, it's Valentine's life that's become a death sentence. Valentine takes away lives but will also commit selfless acts, risking her own life to save someone else's if need be.

Look for more Valentine in the month of August.

A Song of Ice and Fire 2009 Calendar Announced!

Dabel Brothers Publishing is proud to announce the publication of the first ever-illustrated calendar from the epic fantasy series, A Song of Ice and Fire, written by George R. R. Martin. A New York Times #1 Bestseller, Martin's fantasy series has garnered popular and critical praise since the first novel, A Game of Thrones, saw publication in 1996 and has recently been optioned for development by HBO.

The incomparable Michael Komarck, an artist who has amazed fans with his faithful, detailed artwork inspired by A Song of Ice and Fire, illustrates the twelve images in the calendar. His renderings for the calendar are immaculately executed depictions of some of the most popular characters of the series and bring to vivid life some of the most memorable scenes in the epic that's taken the publishing world by storm.

As the only calendar sanctioned by Martin, Dabel Brothers Publishing's A Song of Ice and Fire 2009 Calendar is unarguably a rare treat, it will be distributed to the Direct Market and booksellers. 500 copies  will feature an exclusive, Jon Snow cover and only 250 of them will be numbered, as well as personally signed by George R.R. Martin himself. These exclusives will be sold exclusively from Dabel Brothers Publishing's on-line storefront.

"I am a long time fan of ASOIAF, says Dabel Brothers Vice President, Les Dabel, "being able to help bring it to life visually is a dream come true."

The A Song of Ice and Fire 2009 Calendar will be available in December 2008, well in time for the holiday season.

RETAILER TIPS: LIBRARY READER COPIES

In this day and age, people are watching every dime. Trying new series are risks and many simply are wary.

Why not leave out copies of key issues or trades of different titles so people can try new copies in your store.

Mark them as library copies or reader copies and make sure to put them in a spot where young kids can't get to them if there is any questionable material.
