Some
good news, we’ve compiled

HAVEN DISTRO
UPDATE |
|
We want to thank all the retailers who
placed orders with us “sight unseen”, so
to speak. We realize that we’re new in
town, and your trust is appreciated.
We were not the only bidder for Cold
Cut. Even though Mark and Matt were
giving up the company, they made it
clear that the new owners had to show
the commitment and the ability to keep
the business alive. For the sake of
their customers, they would have just
liquidated it rather than sell to just
anybody. We do not take that faith
lightly.
The website still looks like a
placeholder, but it has the most
important features… a contact form, the
mailing list sign up, and the online
cart login. The rest is coming soon.
If you just want to browse, login with
ID guest, password guest. If you need
an ID to place an order or just a
password reset, shoot us an email with
your store information and we’ll set you
up. |

PUBLISHER
SPOTLIGHT |
HAVEN IN THE NEWS |
|
For years, Cold Cut seemed to be known
as the source only for off the beaten
path and hard to find indies. The
stores who knew about them knew they
were the place to go for Slave Labor,
Drawn & Quarterly, Fantagraphics, Top
Shelf… but could probably only name
a tiny handful of the other 200
publishers in their stock.
While of course we will still carry
those guys, and while of course we’ll
keep our eye out for hard to find gems,
we also want people to know that we
carry plenty of other folks you’ve heard
of like Moonstone, Bongo, and
Antarctic Press. And keep an eye out for more stuff to be
on order from guys like Markosia,
Airship, Checker, and Zenescope.
In future issues, this space will shine
on more publishers that you need to know
about.

It’s still kind of surreal knowing that
Googling my name will actually generate
hits.
Todd Allen at
CBR got the ball rolling back in
February. That one earned me a
mention in Lying In The Gutters (LITG),
too. Oy.
Probably the funnest interview I’ve had
was with Kurt Amacker at
Mania.com.
Chuck Moore of
ComicRelated.com gave us a very warm
welcome.
More recently the buzz has returned
thanks to Milton Griepp’s coverage at
ICv2
Oh and a tip for you publishers… tell
people that you can get your books from
us. Like JMG Comics did in this press
release that hit
Broken Frontier last month. |

INDEPENDENT COMIC
NEWS |

Independent Film, Music, Art...
Independents: A Guide for the Creative
Spirit DVD! |
|
Why
does one choose to become an "artist"?
What makes an artist "independent"?
Where do they get their ideas?
Twenty-four respected creators unveil
the secrets of the artistic mind, by
talking about their favorite medium, the
lowest of the low-brow arts: comic
books.
Comic Books? Art?!?
From cave paintings dating back 35,000
years to the graphic novels of today,
sequential images have been used to tell
magically influential stories. In
examining an art form that has, until
recently, not been accepted as "art",
and discovering what it is these
passionate creators find appealing about
comic books, a bright light is shed on
ALL independent creators, whether they
work in graphic novels, film, music, or
basket weaving.
Join INDEPENDENTS in the exploration of
the path less traveled, on the quest for
the "Well of Ideas".

Zenescope
Lowers Price on Queen of Hearts One-Shot |
|
Zenescope
Entertainment originally planned to
release all three of their TALES FROM
WONDERLAND One-Shots at a $3.99 cover
price due to the additional pages of
story included in each issue but last
minute decided to keep a $2.99 price for
the Queen of Hearts story
which hits stores next Wednesday.
“We had meant to let retailers
know ahead of time about the higher
cover price for the one-shots in case
they didn’t notice the price increase
when placing their orders but realized
that we didn’t get the information out
in time. Instead we
decided to keep this first issue at
$2.99 to avoid any confusion.” said
Zenescope President Joe Brusha. “We take
pride in the relationship we have with
retailers and consumers and we want to
make sure they’re kept in the loop as
much as possible.”
TALES FROM
WONDERLAND is a disturbing and
insightful series of one-shots which
follow the back-stories of three main
characters from Zenescope’s popular
RETURN TO WONDERLAND.
The much anticipated sequel to
the Return series,
entitled BEYOND WONDERLAND, is due
out this summer. The
remaining Tales one-shots (Mad
Hatter and Alice) will
be listed at $3.99 each and will include
additional pages of story.

Drew
Friedman Art Show and Book Signing at
RocketShip in Brooklyn May 16! |
|
WHO:
Drew Friedman
WHAT: Opening reception and book signing
WHERE: Rocketship
208 Smith St., Brooklyn, NY 11201 •
718.797.1348
WHEN: Friday, May 16, 8PM
“Drew
Friedman isn't just a brilliant artist.
He takes you to a place. He takes you
back in time. He makes you smell the
stale cigarettes and cold brisket and
you say thank you for the pleasure.” —
Sarah Silverman
Join
cartoonist
DREW FRIEDMAN for a special
exhibition of original art and objects,
along with a book signing in conjunction
with the release of
More Old Jewish Comedians.
Drew Friedman
is among the most notorious illustrators
and cartoonists in America. According to
Entertainment Weekly, “He holds
a marvelously warped lens up to crusty
politicians and debauched celebrities. A
good-natured misanthrope with an
obsessive style and a sardonic tongue,
Drew Friedman is one of the country’s
sharper political artists.” Friedman
will appear in New York for the first
time since his legendary Friar’s Club
Book-warming in March (as written about
by Lillian Ross in The New Yorker’s
“Talk of the Town”) for a book signing
and exhibition of his original artwork
on Friday, May 16 at 8:00 PM.
Friedman’s
illustrious career has included comics
work published in Art Spiegelman’s
RAW, R. Crumb’s Weirdo and
MAD Magazine, and frequent
illustrations in National Lampoon,
The New York Times, The New
York Observer, among countless
other publications. He was the recipient
of the 2001 Reuben Award for newspaper
illustration (and is a nominee for the
same award this year). Friedman’s work
has been collected by Seattle’s
Fantagraphics Books in
The Fun Never Stops!: An Anthology
of Comic Art 1991 - 2006,
Old Jewish Comedians,
More Old Jewish Comedians,
and
Warts and All.
More Old Jewish Comedians
is the sequel to 2006's wildly popular
Old Jewish Comedians, and has
earned raves from Jerry Lewis, Howard
Stern, Jimmy Kimmel, Sarah Silverman,
The Believer, Entertainment
Weekly and many others. The book
includes the famous (Woody Allen, Joan
Rivers, Carl Reiner, Mel Brooks, Soupy
Sales, etc.), the less-famous (Jerry
Stiller, Zeppo & Gummo Marx, Larry
Storch, Zero Mostel, etc.) and the
largely unknown (Molly Picon, Herbie
Faye, Jan Murray, etc.). The Reuben
Award-winning Friedman presents a
thorough visual history of the 20th
Century's greatest Borscht-Belt
comedians in 34 full-page, liver-spotted
portraits.
A reception
for the artist will begin on Friday, May
16 at 8:00PM. Admission is free to the
public of all ages. The exhibition
continues though June 4, 2008.
A selection
of images in a variety of formats is
available for publication. For
additional information, contact Eric
Reynolds.

Demon's
Regret - The Titles Says It All! |
|
When
Lucifer decided to wage war on heaven
with his third of the host of heaven’s
angels in tow, the lot of them fell from
grace, forever condemned and cast away
from the Almighty. Now one of them
regrets having followed his new master
and tries to make amends the only way he
can.
In
Demon’s Regret, Asmodeus fell with
the rest of his brethren and he has
carried that guilt throughout time.
Unfortunately, his demon status can
never be revoked, but that won’t stop
him from thwarting Satan’s plans any
which way he can. Taking matters into
his own hands, as he has done throughout
history, Asmodeus uses the tools he has
at his disposal to throw a pitchfork in
the plans of the Father of All Lies.
Writer/Creator Mitch Brown tells this
classic religious story with a new
twist, dictated masterfully by his crisp
dialogue and incredible imagination.
Joining him for the ride is Comic Book
Idol 3 finalist, and current Boom
Studios! artist, Wilfredo Torres (Salem:
Queen of Thorns) lending his
exquisite artistic stylings to breathe
life into this supernatural world.
Colorist Mike Kilgore and
letterer/designer Nate Pride also add
their formidable talents and experience
to the production of the book.
Providing
covers for the book is comic book
veteran and artist extraordinaire,
Michael Golden. Golden’s work can also
be seen in recent issues of Iron Man,
Exiles and Wonder Woman,
and such classics as G.I. Joe,
Micronauts, Batman and
so much more.
Demon’s Regret
joins other popular titles from Digital
Webbing, including Bloodrayne,
Bleeders, Team 14 and
Dark 48.
What the
critics say:
"Anyone
picking up this book will be in for a
treat.... a story well worth reading."
Robert Sodaro, Freelanceink.blogspot.com
"4 out of 5
stars"
Richard Vasseur, Jazma Online Forum
"Bullseye.
Take a chance and pick up this book.”
Bill Gladman, Zonetrooper.com
"Demon's
Regret is a taut anti-hero story.
Leaves the reader craving the next
issue."
Scoop - Mondo Media

Demon’s Regret #1 (of 3) is in
this month’s issue of Previews scheduled
for a June, 2008 release date.

RETAILER TIPS
- FRONT COUNTER PRODUCTS |
 |
|
Ok, so you normally put out the new hot
card product on the front counter right
by the register. It’s a good impulse buy
and you can keep an eye on it so no
“sticky fingers” walk off with it. And
you know when Bob Thompson comes in he’s
going to spend a half hour feeling all
the packs to guess which one he wants.
Mike Smith and Joe Schmoe are all going
to do the same thing too!
When you have a hot product like this
and people who crowd your register area
it’s all too easy for less aggressive
customers or people buying items they
didn’t plan to before entering the store
to be discouraged from completing their
purchase.
Keep a watchful eye on who comes near
the front of the store and then shies
away from the register. |
