HAVEN DISTRO UPDATE

Sponsored By:

In the last month I've heard form various suppliers that Diamond has raised their minimums on comic sales -- again... they ceased green-section reorders completely... then they stopped doing "offered agains"... and now their fancy new ordering software is crashing many of their customer's computers.

So after hearing all that, I found myself a bit befuddled at some of the responses that trickled back to me about the Enemi catalog.

I hear that store owners like the books they see... but they think that setting up an account with Haven is too big of a hassle.

My only reaction to this was, "Huh?"

True story... A guy called last week and said he wanted some Lazerman comics.  He was a brand new customer who had not ordered from Cold Cut, so I had to set him up new.

I took his order on the spot over the phone.  Next time he'll be able to browse our web cart if he wants because I gave him an online account while I was at it.

The entire process from calling me cold with no account to having an order completed took about 15 minutes.  It would have been 10 but he had to pause a couple times while customers came to him.

No credit check.  No paperwork.  No hassle.  Honest.

For our regular customers who already know what a painless joy it is to order from us... you'll fine some re-offered items in the Slave Labor section.  Johnny #2 and Fillerbunny are back in print.

Quite a wide range of new arrivals, too.  Check out the shiny BLAKE's 7 audio dramas -- not available from Diamond.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

“We are excited to bring GEARHEAD to life.  It’s a terrific character-driven story set in a unique and compelling world,” said Hurd.

“To work with Gale on Gearhead is simply fantastic.  We couldn’t have found a better partner.”, Arcana Studio’s Sean O’Reilly commented.

Gale Anne Hurd and Valhalla Motion Pictures most recently produced the blockbuster feature The Incredible Hulk for Marvel Studios which was released by Universal Pictures this summer.  Valhalla is continually developing a broad range of projects, including Marvel’s Punisher:  War Zone for Lionsgate and Sony Pictures Entertainment which stars Ray Stevenson and is being released on December 5, 2008.  Hurd has produced more than two dozen feature films that have generated billions of dollars of revenue.  Her other credits include The Terminator, Aliens, Armageddon, Aeon Flux, The Punisher, Terminator 2:  Judgment Day and Terminator 3:  Rise of The Machines among others.

Interview with Koni Waves' Mark Poulton

Valhalla Motion Pictures, the production company behind such box office hits as Aliens, Terminator 2: Judgment Day and Armageddon, most recently produced the blockbuster feature The Incredible Hulk for Marvel Studios, as well as the upcoming Punisher: War Zone.

This month, Arcana's VP of Operation and Koni Waves writer, Mark Poulton takes questions from the fans.

Question: Which of your projects are you most proud of and why?

MP: I would say the upcoming Avengelyne vs. Koni Waves for the simple fact that Rob Liefeld was the reason I wanted to get into comics in the first place. I remember going to my LCS back in the day and getting the bagged X-Force #1 and getting Youngblood #1 the day both were released. They were huge events to me. I bought everything Rob did... and still do. So just the fact that Rob called me up and offered me the use of Avengelyne and I have been able to consult with him on the project means a lot. It's the fullfillment of a dream.

Question: What are your plans for the future with Koni Waves?

MP: Well, Koni Waves: Ghouls Gone Wild! is out this month. And Steve, Dex, and I are currently working on Koni Waves: The Perfect Wave which is a hardcover collection of all the books we have done. We are going back and coloring First Wave, as well as adding new scenes into the old stories. It's kind of like the director's cut of the book. We also are adding a brand new ending. We have some other projects in the works too so there's no timeline as to when the hardcover will come out. However, we have a bunch of Koni team-ups like the Avengelyne one I mentioned earlier and a spin-off Koni Confidential oneshot, which will be Koni Waves in high school. Hopefully, that will tide fans over. It's crazy thinking we have so many Koni related projects in the works. I remember when Koni was first solicited there were some people who thought we would never be heard from again after the first issue. I have to admit it feels mighty good to prove those people wrong. :)

Question: Who would you like to see play Koni in a Koni Waves movie?

MP: I'd have to go with Grace Park from Battlestar Galactica. She's perfect. And I know you didn't ask, but I would cast Dwayne "Rock" Johnson as Prince Hopohopo. That's my dream cast.

Question: What is something Koni fans don't know about Koni yet?

MP: That Arcana's own Jessica Evelyn Murphy aka Eve: Vampire Diva is the reason Koni got booted from the Honolulu Police Department! Which leads me into my next question...

Question: Are there any plans for a crossover within the confines of the "Arcana-verse?" If not, would you like to do one?

MP: Yes, there is. Eve's creator, Frank LaPerch and I have been trading ideas back and forth for a Koni/Eve team-up that will give the lowdown on Koni's last days in the police force. it's going to be a lot of fun. I hear Banzai Girl will even have a cameo appearance in it as well. I'd love to do more "Arcana-verse" crossovers. I have an idea for a Koni/Kade story as well. But I'm getting a little ahead of myself I think.

Question: If you could take a shot at writing one of the other Arcana titles which would you like to get your hands on?

MPKade hands down. I love the whole timeless/though the ages aspect of the character. I actually pitched a Kade story to Sean O'Reilly involving Kade in 1400 Romania battling Vlad the Impaler and the Fallen. He said it was something he was definitely interested in doing. So we'll see... maybe there's some Kade in my future.

Question: Besides comics do you have aspirations of doing any other types of writing?

MP: I started my writing career by optioning a couple of screenplays that never made it past development in the early 2000s. I'd definitely like to get one in production one of these days. But aside from that I really want to write a children's book. I'm working on one right now with my Koni partner, Dexter Weeks, called "A Cat Named Haiku."

Question: Would you consider yourself a comic "geek?" How big is your comic collection? What is your most prized possession in your collection?

MP: Absolutely! I've been collecting comics since I was little. My collection is a lot smaller than it once was. I sold a good chunk of it to pay for my honeymoon a few years back. But I still have a pretty good collection. I recently built in my house a walk in cedar closet to house my collection. I'll have to throw some pics online one of these days. Besides comics, I also collect statues, busts, sketches, and original artwork. One of my favorite pieces is this great splash page from X-Force that Liefeld gave to me at NYCC a couple of years back. And I just got into collecting blank skateboard decks. I get different artists to sketch on them. My first deck has Koni Waves, Demonslayer, and Avengelyne on it. And this summer I just got a Lost Boys deck done. It's becoming my new obsession.

Well, that's it for questions. I want to thank everyone for all of their support. Have a Happy Thanksgiving... and go buy Ghouls Gone Wild!

Art & Story by Jay Piscopo

Book # 2
"The Mystery of the Sargasso Sea" Part Two
Art & Story by Jay Piscopo

112 pages - Full Color

Have you ever heard of a comic book based on a soda pop? Neither had I, until I came upon this independent title which simply blew me away upon first reading. The Readers' Digest version goes like this. A family owned and operated soda company in Portland, ME., had been making a very popular drink called Capt'N Eli's Root Beer. If you are a connoisseur of soft drinks, you are going to want to get a taste of this sweet ambrosia for sure. Now the marketing gang at the brewery came up with the idea making a comic book that would somehow tie-in with their product and help make it even more successful. To their good fortune, the man they recruited to pull this off is comic pro Jay Piscopo, a Maine native who both writes and draws.

Piscopo examined the company, its history and amidst this research, he was taken by the little boy dressed up in a fishermen's gear who appeared on the root beer's label. The lad was of course CapN Eli, and he is rowing a boat in which are his two companions, a white dog and a colorful parrot. As the company was already represented by this young boy, why not develop a fantastic science-fiction adventure saga around him? From that idea this amazing book developed into the package it is today. Thus far the company's publishing arm, Nemo Publishing, has released two gorgeous and thick volumes, each crammed pack with all kinds of way out action.

In book one, which sports a cover by Steve Rude, we meet Capt'N Eli, a veritable mystery of the sea. As a baby, without any identification tags of any kind, he washes up on the shores of a lighthouse off the coast of Maine floating in a futuristic pod; shades of a sci-fi Moses. The baby is found the by the elderly couple who tend the lighthouse and they soon become his adoptive parents, christening him Capt'N Eli. As the boy grows up under their loving care, it becomes evident that he is drawn to the sea and also has a genius for inventing things. It is Mom and Pops who give him the dog Barney. Later, while visiting a nearby island, Eli and Barney discover an exotic talking parrot named Jolly Roger. By the end of the book's first chapter, Eli and his pals bid Mom and Pops farewell and sail off in his home-made submarine. He is all of ten years old. Eli soon joins up with a group of colorful science/adventurers called the Seasearchers who travel the world's ocean aboard their wondrous sub, the Seascape.

The book's (and its website) have a tag-line, "Stand by adventure!" And that is exactly what Piscopo delivers non-stop. There's all kinds of bizarre underwater alien villains, a mysterious figure known as Commander X who supposedly comes form the future and time-travel aplenty as there's never a dull moment in this series. What I loved about the book is that it has the same family friendly fun of the old classic animated series, JONNY QUEST. Piscopo also uses computer generated images as the backdrops for his own pencil and ink figures thus allowing him to invent some really wonderful sea and air crafts.

If there is any flaw to this high octane stew, it's probably the fact that there is so much going on plot-wise. The reader is given a too much back story to digest. Some of it could have easily been condensed and better yet, spread out over a few more issues. Piscopo's sin is his own enthusiasm in that his head is filled with all this fun stuff and he's just putting it down as fast as he can. I hope as the series develops, he'll become more comfortable in his storytelling and stop rushing events to allow the plot to move at a more normal pacing. Don't get me wrong, I love fast paced stories, but this has been in overdrive since page one, and I would imagine most kid readers need a respite to catch their imaginary breaths.

The LazerBlog Guarantee - HB Comics Guarantees at Least 12 Issues of Lazerman!

Alan and Chris Herbert of HB Comics have guaranteed that no matter what happens their independent comic book Lazerman will release at least 12 issues, an unprecedented guarantee in the world of indy comics.

"Right before Superbowl III, as legend tells, Joe Namath was confronted by a rowdy Colts fan at a club. Being taunted about being an 18 point underdog for the upcoming Superbowl was too much for the hot-headed Namath, and the next day at a press conference he would go on to utter the most earth shattering eight words in football history...

"We're gunna win the Game, I GUARANTEE it!"

And thus, the GUARANTEE, as it would later be called, was born.

Yes, The Jets would go on to shock the world and fullfill the "guarantee" by beating the Colts...but what on EARTH does this have to do with Lazerman???"

And what that has to do with Lazerman is the fear of many readers of independent comics that if they get into a comic it won't last.  Either money will run out, or distribution will be cancelled, and the creators will be left with the hard choice of not continuing their book leaving readers without closure.  So Alan and Chris have decided to quell the hesitancy of potential readers by guaranteeing to print at least 12 issues of Lazerman.

"Well, That is why at HBComics we are offering our own version of "The GUARATNEE."..specifically, the 12 ISSUE GUARANTEE.

That's right, we are guaranteeing at LEAST 12 issues of Lazerman.

"But how can you, a small indy company, make such a bold claim?" you may ask?

Well it's simple. for the most part, our overhead for actually creating the comic is next to nothing. Alan writes it and I draw it. There aren't a lot of other people involved in the process, so it really comes down to our own drive and motivation. I've already promised Alan, as I am now promising all of you, that even if we sell a total of three copies and I never see a penny, I am going to do at least 12 issues."

Even if distribution falls through, the duo will continue to present their book through on-demand print service Ka-Blam in their IndyPlanet online store.

"My point is simply this: There will be AT LEAST 12 issues, and you will be able to get them. I guarantee it.

-Chris"
