HAVEN DISTRO UPDATE

Sponsored By:

It's been a whirlwind couple of weeks for the comics market.  First Diamond gives us a fabulous gift for our 1 year anniversary by unceremoniously axing 30-some odd quality publishers from Previews.  Not only are the guys who fell below the new PO threshold turning to us, but a number of the survivors were inspired to sign on with us, too.  Happy birthday to us!

Then I jetted off to New York Comic-Con.  The support from the publishers I talked to was amazing.  I had a lot of great conversations with current suppliers and welcomed a number of new faces.  They aren't all in the New Arrivals list yet, but you'll be seeing a lot more next month.

I'm looking forward to working with roughly double the number of active suppliers that we had last month.  One huge addition to the lineup starting some time in March is Sonic the Hedgehog!  One customer I told about this literally giggled like a school girl.  I'd call that a good sign.

Sales on Sonic could pave the way for a certain popular teenager and his pals from Riverdale High to join our catalog.  So spread the word.

We've also begun listing Advance Orders in our online ordering system. We're starting with about 65 or so products as an acid test.  You'll find them listed below, on our cart at Havendistro.com ... and very soon you can put them in your pull list on Comixology.com!  Check em out.

Issue 2 of the print catalog is out now.  If you are a retailer and you're not getting yours yet, let me know and I'll make sure you're on the list.  If you're a fan and you want to buy one, let me know and I'll hook you up. Advertising opportunities are available.  We'll be putting more information about how to obtain and advertise in the the ever-improving catalog on the site soon.

I want to thank everyone for their patience and their support this past year.  We started out as a mere speck on the radar -- not even a blip. And now here we are with this massive spotlight on us.  Thanks to our loyal customers and suppliers sticking by us during our growth, we're able to meet the challenges suddenly being heaped in front of us.

-- Lance

INDEPENDENT COMIC NEWS

Studio 407 Picks Up the Critically Acclaimed Smuggling Spirits

Studio 407 is thrilled to announce that they have acquired Ben Fisher and Michael Henderson's Smuggling Spirits for publication. After it was announced last year that Ambrosia would be shutting down, Studio 407 jumped at the chance to have Smuggling Spirits be apart of their expanding catalog. Last month Studio 407 also finalized a deal with Argentina's Altercomics that will bring their most popular titles to North America.

Studio 407's managing director Alex Leung says "We picked up Smuggling Spirits from Ambrosia, and we thought it was an incredible book that went under the radar, and did not get the exposure it deserved when it was first released in single volumes. I think both Ben and Michael are incredible talents to watch for and their skills have meshed perfectly to produce an incredibly unique storytelling experience. We feel extremely fortunate to be involved with this book."

Leung continues. "The difference between this and the Ambrosia release is that it collects all the volumes of the original series into a handsome, full-sized hardcover book, that people will love to have on their coffee table. With the stark, red and black cover, it will definitely be eye-catching and compel people to pick it up. There are also 12 pages of additional artwork and a new ending as well that the creators felt was closer to what they originally envisioned, so you can easily call this the definitive, "director's cut' edition."

Smuggling Spirits is described as: Set in a nightmarish vision of the past where deadly monstrosities called "darklings" roam the shadows of Prohibition-Era America, Al Stone is a bootlegger who finds himself on the run when he inadvertently stumbles upon the bloody secret of the creatures' survival. As the beasts close in to take back what's theirs, Al and his young ward, Nathan, must make their final stand. Smuggling Spirits is a pulse pounding, thrill ride that blends the action noir of Sin City with the horror and suspense of Hellboy. Read what Rue Morgue calls "a shot of white lightning."

****Chosen as a Staff Pick in the February Previews*****
TAKE A LOOK INSIDE!

Comics Bulletin says Smuggling Spirits is "For any fan of the horror genre...harsh, humorous and all together weird."

Ain't It Cool News calls it "Road to Perdition with monsters...I really liked this one."

Planet Saturday Comics - Creating Fans One at a Time

In the tradition of Sunday comic strips, Planet Saturday follows the real and imaginary adventures of a kid who grows up to be a happy, if somewhat hapless dad.  Chronicling his exploits and imaginations as a kid, Emory grows up to be called M and father an imaginative child of his own.

Planet Saturday Comics is co-founded by Monty and Kelli Stevens Kane, and has been getting several great reviews of the strip lately:

"It is a very touching book without being forced. The sweetness is genuine and very MANLY. This is a nice book to stuff dad's Father's Day Stocking (a tradition I am unsuccessfully trying to start at my house) and a good book to bring along if you are dumb enough to read while you walk." - Comics in the Classroom

"...these charming, amusing and occasionally absurd stories made me grin throughout. A couple of moments I laughed aloud. The artwork only enhances the comedy." - Comics Bulletin

"These stories are so universal to fatherhood and parenting that I couldn’t help but smile when I read them." - Comics and... Other Imaginary Tales

"It is a great comic, somewhere between Calvin and Hobbes and The Wonder Years but still very much it's own thing."  - ComixTalk

Check every Monday at www.planetsaturday.com for new updates.

Planet Saturday Comics Vol. 1 available soon from Haven Distributors.

eigoMANGA and Visionary Comics Studio Publish "The Frog Princess" Graphic Novel

eigoMANGA LLC and Visionary Comics Studio proudly announce the forthcoming publication of "The Frog Princess" (Diamond Order Code JAN094212), an original hardcover graphic novel from writer Jeff Loew (finalist in the "Be a Visionary" contest co-sponsored by VCS and AAM/Markosia) and artist Rie Ikaza (aka "Fitri," one of Indonesia's hottest manga artists).

Inspired by true events, "The Frog Princess" tells the story of amphibian biologist Larissa Talcott, as she fights to save her research pond from real estate developers... while her new lawyer boyfriend Liam secretly helps the developers turn the pond into a golf course. Can their romance survive?  Can Larissa hold on to her ideals while Liam tries to find his own true voice? And what about the frogs?  Loew and Ikaza's graphic novel combines romantic comedy, action, drama, and fantasy, all wrapped up in a socially-conscious eco-fable -- in a formula destined to prove irresistible to shojo manga fans and all fans of character-driven storytelling.

"The concept for 'The Frog Princess' came about when I learned that a local university was scrambling to save its biology labs after a change in the water supply threatened every amphibian on campus," explains writer Loew, whose work has been featured in the Judge Dredd Megazine, Arcana's Dark Horrors, eigoMANGA’s Sakura Pakk, and in a weekly column for comics news website Broken Frontier.  "Starting from this basic conflict, the characters and situations just sprang to life."

Along with the fictionalized conflict of saving Larissa's research pond, "The Frog Princess" deals with the real, broader issue of the drastic decline in the world’s amphibian populations.

"When Jeff brought 'The Frog Princess' to us, I knew it was something eigoMANGA wanted to be a part of," says Austin Osueke, eigoMANGA’s CEO and publisher.  "Larissa and Liam face conflicts we all can relate to.  They're rekindling a relationship while realizing they may share different values.  They're each facing the clash between their ideals and the pragmatic pursuit of success. You can't help but read on to find out how it's all going to end.  Or to see what ridiculous situation they'll stumble into next."

Visionary Comics Studios head C. Edward Sellner shares Osueke's excitement. "We've been fans of Jeff and his work ever since he entered and became a finalist in our 'Be a Visionary' talent contest.  We're thrilled to be working with eigoMANGA to bring the work of Jeff and Ms. Ikaza to a wider audience in a story that has a message we all need to hear."

The complete Frog Princess hardcover also includes two backup short stories by Loew and world-renowned Argentinean master Oscar "Sensei" Capristo (Heavy Metal): "Goatspell" (featuring Grynn & Barrett, Dark Arts Detectives) and "I Married Ghost Girl"; along with a third short story by Loew and Spanish sensation Esdras, "Night and Day." The Frog Princess Hardcover is available for pre-order now and ships on March 25, 2008, 160 pages, with a $14.95 cover price.

Interview with Heaven's Echo's Siike Donnelly

This month, Arcana's Vice President of Operations, Mark Poulton interviews Heaven's Echo writer/artist/creator, Siike Donnelly.

MP: Siike, what can you tell us about your upcoming Arcana comic, Heaven's Echo?

SD: Sadly, not much. Just that it truly is a dream come true to work on it. Imagine some of the cool stories and superhero battles you'd love to see in comics today. That is what will make up the Heaven's Echo universe. I've always wanted to see Captain America fight Superman in a battle that will only allow one of them to walk away. Legal reasons prevent those other companies from crossing over like that and telling stories like that, but by creating our own world here, we can get fights like that as often as we want.

MP: What attracted you to bring this project to Arcana Comics?

SD: The guys behind the magic of Arcana Comics did. I met you Mark, nearly two years ago now at Comic Con '06 in San Diego. From there we talked about short stories of mine and then I eventually met Sean O'Reilly. Luckily, Sean and I just clicked with one another the second we started talking. When I saw the passion he had for telling stories and building a new mythology, I knew this was certainly the guy to work with. Not to mention the fact the he actually came and offered it to me, which truly is the biggest honor in my world. Another attraction is certainly the challenge of creating something new for fans. We've all seen over dozens of "New Universes" that are usually hit or miss. As a writer, I love to be challenged, especially at this stage in my career.

MP: Who were some of your writing influences?

SD: Agatha Christie. I grew up with a very traditional way of telling stories. Her mystery books were always ones that kept my mind working, even after I had read the story. She was the first writer to show me how powerful words can be. As far as other writers that influence me, I'm a huge Jeph Loeb fan. I love Ed Brubaker's work. Allan Heinberg. Peter David. S.D. Perry. Stephen King. Christopher Moore. Warren Ellis. David Goyer. Geoff Johns. David Koepp. Shawn Ryan. Brian Augustyn and Humerto Ramos (I'm a HUGE Crimson fan). And I cannot forget, the amazing Judy Blume for her book "Are you there God? It's me Margaret."

MP: Do you get inspiration for your writing from other sources?

SD: I mainly get inspiration from music and actual people. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his autobiography had a very profound impact on me as a young man. I wish I could have been around during that time. My grandparents, my mother, and my brother are key players in the man I am today. I honestly would have given up writing years ago if it wasn't for them. They are truly my muses. Sevendust. Tricky. Rolling Stones. INXS. Rob Zombie. Incubus. Linkin Park. Fort Minor. DMX. RZA. Graeme Revell. Harry Gregson-Williams. Frank Sinatra. These are all just a fraction of the musical talents that also inspire me and influence my writing. (laughs) Sorry, had to mention music. I'm one of those nerds too.

MP: Now you've also recently written a novel, Rhino. Was making the transition from writing novels to comics hard? What are some of the differences?

SD: So far, the transition from novels to comics has not been hard at all. Rhino was actually written as a screenplay when I was seventeen years old. Over the years I've rewritten it so many times as a screenplay, I just decided to one day flesh it out even more. So the novel now reads very cinematically, which is how I think books should be written these days. With less people reading novels, I feel that my way of reaching the people that don't read as much is to make it seem like it's not just a book. As far as differences, the only major one is action beats. They have to snap well in a comic, even more so than in a novel. Also, in a novel you tend to be inside each character's head a lot more, leaving less need for dialogue some of the time, but in a comic, fans want to read great dialogue and want their one-liners. I'll be working extra hard to make sure I deliver on this end.

MP: Anything else you'd like to tell fans?

SD: Just that a lot of hard work and planning is going in to this new series to make it something very special. I, like other comic fans, get frustrated at times when I read things like "groundbreaking" and "will have ramifications for years to come." The goal at Arcana is to tell stories that are just great stories. Stories that make a difference, not just in the characters' lives, but in readers as a well. We want to inspire the next generation of writers, the way we ourselves were inspired in our youths. That's why us writers write at all. It's our job to create the universe, but it's up to the fans to keep it alive.

Spread the word!
Whatsagoingon?
One word: economy. Late last week the news started to spread that Diamond Distribution would be changing a few of their solicitation policies. We were curious, so we contacted our rep and conversed on the matter. As I stated on the blog, the only real change at present is my decision to cancel the plans for SUPERIOR SHOWCASE #4. Diamond's new policy wasn't the ONLY deciding factor in that decision. SS has been slowing losing momentum, and not really turning a profit. The rest of our plans for 09 are still good and in place. In fact, my Diamond rep came back with a number of helpful suggestions in regards to next month's solicitation... which I'm VERY excited about. What can you do? Well, if you dig what we're doing, talk about it. Heck, even if you don't dig it, talk about it! It's a matter of making people more aware of us, and hopefully they'll be proactive and order our product in advance via their local comic shop or by some other means. So... SPREAD THE WORD!

eigoMANGA Studios Creates Graphic Novel Based On American Novel, God Drug

eigoMANGA announces the release of the comic book adaptation of 'God Drug' (Diamond Order Code JAN094213) to retail stores on March 29, 2009. The 'God Drug' graphic novel is based of a highly acclaimed American fiction novel originally written by Stephen Antczak.

'God Drug' is a story about the C.I.A. subjecting a group of low-ranking marines with experimental LSD-like hallucinogen. The experiments failed and created a being with destructive psychic abilities who was driven insane after being held in cryo-stasis for over 30 years.

God Drug's comic adaptation was written by seasoned screenwriter Natashia McGough whose television credits include 'Goode Family' and 'Nightstalker'. The original God Drug novel was inspired by punk rock and psychedelic drug scenes in modern society however, Natashia took the God Drug comic into a different direction. She believes that the hidden message within the story is about giving birth to new realities. She also wanted to give the characters more complex and multi-dimensional roles. "It's not a black and white world. Everything has shades of grey. Even within darkness there is still purity and beauty within that", states Natashia.

"I let Natashia do her thing her way. The God Drug manga isn't my book, it's her's and the artist's now" claims novelist and creator, Stephen Antczak. He fully supported eigoMANGA's initiative to create a manga adaptation out of God Drug, "I felt like the story lent itself to the manga world. It could not have been done as an American style comic, in my opinion. Yes, it will be tough, but that's what will make it a kick-ass manga...it will take passion and creativity to make it work".

The 'God Drug' graphic novel is released to retailers on March 25, 2009. And graphic novel can be previewed online at http://www.GodDrug.com.

"I hope that the readers will be visually pleased and mentally stimulated as they read God Drug. There are many profound, subliminal messages about life and our purpose within it in God Drug. This comic book reassures us that we, as humans, definitely create our own reality. It also allows us to understand how our perception can direct our thoughts and actions. I hope the readers enjoy it", adds Natashia.

Making sure not to confuse anyone, Bluewater has made a special cover for the back of the flipbook.  The original covers, UPC codes  & order codes have remained the same.

“With the economy the way that it is, we realize that $3.99 is a lot to spend on a 22 page comic book,” said Bluewater Productions Publisher, Darren G. Davis.  “I buy comics every week and I see how expensive they have become. With that in mind we are making sure that people that buy our books get the most for their money.”

Bluewater is also making sure to add bonus material to our other titles.  “Plan 9 From Outer Space…Strikes Again”, will have 28 pages of sequential content.

Davis continued, “It is rare that you will find one of our books with only 22 pages. We want to do more than just put in a pin-up to take up space. For example with the Ray Harryhausen titles we showcased some of Harryhausen’s original artwork.”

The “Vincent Price Presents” series will not only have a 4-page back-up stories but pin-ups as well.  In each issue the comic comes with an intro and outro featuring Vincent Price.  This is on top of the 22-page story.   The Willaim Shatner line of comics will also have a bunch of extra material.  The Michelle Obama on-shot will have 26 pages of content.

Super Real Update

It’s true, one year since the last issue of Super Real hit comic book shops, I’m happy to say the wait is over, and that there is indeed a new issue on it’s way!

Although it won’t be in the Diamond Previews catalog for another month, the new book does happen to tie into this inauguration day, as it features a new cast member who resembles a certain new president…

SUPER REAL: Cast Change (aka Episode VI: The Cast Strike Back) will be a double-sized issue listed in the March Previews catalog (out the last week of February, 2/25), for product shipping to comic book shops this May.

So, I wanted to get all the friends of the book advance word, and a peek at the cover (see attached).

As you likely know, Super Real has been on hiatus for a year now, so this new issue will serve as a standalone story that also picks up where we left off, and ties up the series’ first story arc. It’s essentially the next issue of the regular series, but it will be marketed as a new special issue. A king-sized issue all written and drawn by me, that ties up all the questions the series has raised, and puts our cast through one final crisis, or a civil war of sorts, where a new cast member squares off with our five participants, with everything on the line.

Oh, and by the way, the new cast member looks a lot like Barack Obama!

As any fan of the book knows, we’ve used presidential likenesses all along, so it’s only fitting that we close out our story with a character inspired by the new president, to bring things full circle!

Stay tuned for more information on this exciting new issue, and also, keep your eyes open for digital offerings, and other new products from Super Real Graphics in the coming year.

CONVENTION APPEARANCES AND NEW ARTWORK

The 2009 convention season is already upon us, and as much as I’d like to return to New York Comic Con again this year (it’s a great show), a schedule conflict simply won’t allow it. And as you may know, Wizard LA was canceled/postponed, so I won’t be doing that either.

Here are the shows I have confirmed so far though:

Wondercon - February 27th thru March 1st

Emerald City Comicon – April 4th and 5th

San Diego Comic-Con – July 22nd thru 26th

I’m looking at potentially doing Heroes con, and/or Wizard World Chicago too.

I’ll also be creating a new 2009 sketchbook full of new and unpublished artwork, and lots of fan art… as well as new prints and the like.

Additionally, I have just a very few copies of the 2008 sketchbook remaining if anyone’s interested, just check out the website store: http://superrealgraphics.com/page3.html

Looking forward, as always, to mixing it up with the fans and all my friends. So, I hope to see you at one of this year’s shows!

Aside from the conclusion of Super Real, I’ve got a lot planned for 2009, and am really looking forward to a huge year!

Thanks for your support,

Jason

Comic Creator Steve Scott Joins Eva Ink Artist Group!

You no doubt have seen the work of Smallville artist, Steve Scott if you are a fan of the hit TV show. But others have known about his work for quite some time! Steve first made his mark on the comics industry via his sequential art at Malibu Comics, his wildly popular stint on Razor for London Nights, as well as New Warriors, Hourman, and JLA for Marvel and DC Comics.

Now, Eva Ink Artist Group is pleased to welcome Steve to their organization of top talent as they will be introducing him to an ever growing number of clients and art-lovin' folks!

With an early resume like the one Steve has amassed, one wouldn't think that up until recently--much like the superheroes he brings to life--Steve led a duel life for more than sixteen years: firefighter by day and artist by night! It took one horrible event to bring those two identities together. On September 11, 2001, he watched, with the rest of the nation as the Twin Towers fell. Soon afterwards, DC Comics published The Worlds Finest Comic Book: Writers & Artists Tell Stories to Remember. Steve was selected among the few to contribute to this historical collection, which was later exhibited, and is now archived, at the Library of Congress.

It took a second life-changing event to bring him fully into the comic book fold. Steve was continuing his firefighting career in Biloxi, Mississippi, and as fate would have it, was on duty during Hurricane Katrina--being one of the few firefighters to be interviewed by President Bush on his visit through the devastated area.

As Steve relates in Wizard Magazine #193, the disaster was an emphatic catalyst for him to change course and pursue his love for art full-time.

“All the original art I owned, the Golden's etc.-- all the art I saved and collected over the years, all ended up in the Gulf of Mexico," he laments. But he and his family were safe.

Relocating away from the coast, Steve soon found himself surrounded by a community of artists in his new home--Atlanta, Georgia--and also found all the encouragement he needed from his contemporaries to pick up the pencil full time.

Immediately, Steve's work began to appear in the pages of DC Comics Shadowpact, The Creeper, Batman Legends of the Dark Knight, and Checkmate. He got a particularly special kick out of bringing to life some of DC Comics strangest characters like Detective Chimp, Rex the Wonder Dog, Rag Man, The Phantom Stranger, and many others.

Recent projects at Marvel Comics, and DC Comics include working with industry legends Louise Simonson and Chris Claremont on the titles Magik and Exiles, as well as work on the Fantastic Four, Avengers, She-Hulk and The Hulk. Steve also recently finished a Kyle XY one-shot for Disney/ABC with writer Jeff Parker; Indiana Jones and the Tomb of the Gods for Dark Horse, and a Batman Dark Knight adaptation, featuring the only artwork of Heath Ledger's joker turn, which was an addition to the Blueray disk of the movie.

“Needless to say, we could not be happier to have Steve as part of our family of select artists,” commented Renee Witterstaetter of Eva Ink. “I've known Steve for some time, and know that his abilities and work ethic are both astounding.”

Steve joins other creators represented by Eva Ink including industry legend and co-creator of Rogue, artist Michael Golden and fine art painter Mark Texeira, well known for his Ghost Rider, Black Panther and Moon Knight work among much more.

Along with these two stellar artists, Steve's work can currently be seen in the Astounding Art exhibit and sale at Manhattan's Illustration House in Manhattan, with several pieces available for acquisition. www.illustrationhouse.com. Steve will also be featured in gallery shows and store signings in Europe this coming May.

The Unleashing of the In Flesh and Spirit Comic Book Series

Blood Curdling! Spine-Tingling! Unearthly!

Overtone Comics unleashes its debut title In Flesh and Spirit on an unsuspecting public! A gothic odyssey intensely influenced by classic horror cinema and 1970s comics, In Flesh and Spirit gives comic, cinema and music fans alike something to really sink their teeth into.

Written by Baron Misuraca, frontman of the renowned Gothic Metal band Vasaria, In Flesh and Spirit chronicles the origin and ongoing saga of Baron Misuraca, vampire. Originally a condemned 14th century musician now reborn in contemporary New York City, Baron is slave to two masters—an insatiable lust for blood and a spiritual quest for redemption. Additionally, In Flesh And Spirit unleashes an array of all-new awe-inspiring femme fatale characters lead by the ultimate antagonist Apathess, modeled by Sci-Fi supermodel Stacy E. Walker.

In Flesh and Spirit features artwork by the artist dream (or perhaps nightmare?) team assembled specifically for this undertaking. DC/Heavy Metal/Vampirella artist extraordinaire Alex Horley captures the very essence of undeath with his ominous cover. Penciler/inker David G. Williams and colorist Jarreau Wimberly bring In Flesh and Spirit to life, sensuously rendering its interior with a haunting noir aesthetic.

The premiere issue of In Flesh and Spirit is available for inhuman consumption through Diamond Distributors in the February edition of Previews on page 292 and at www.InFleshAndSpirit.com. Bare your throats and relinquish your souls...

All in all, “In Flesh and Spirit” is excellent at being a classical horror comic with everything a comic like this needs: Monologues, extensive narrative, black and white art and lots of halfnaked women.

Dominik B. – The Independent Comic Site

Gothic sensibility, Vampires, the undead, and rock and roll...what more can you ask for!

Bone Digger – Horror News

At $3.50 cover price you shouldn’t let this pass you by. This book has GREAT promise so far, and I can’t wait to see where this title goes!

Keith Huening – Horror Comics Review

Love the darkly delicious and somewhat sublime feel the illustrations evoke and the way the panels and splash pages are presented, as they add to the aesthetic flow of time within this piece seemingly effortlessly—truly a treat to read!

G.L. Giles –The Vampire Vignettes

Written and published for fans of horror cinema and dark music, In Flesh and Spirit weds the NYC goth-metal scene to classic Hammer horror flicks and 70’s publications like Vampirella.

Dave Wolff – Good Times Magazine

RETAILER TIPS: EYES ON THE PRIZE

One of the hardest things about running your own business is keeping an eye on the long term. When bills are piling up, suppliers are shipping poorly and your part-timer is whining for more pay how do you keep an eye on the long term construction of your business?

1.  Where do you want to be?  Any good company or team has a focused view of what they are about and where they want to be.  Create a phrase or goal statement about your store and hang it where you and your staff can see it on a regular basis.

2. Set aside a regular weekly appointment with your self to work on building your business. 15-30 minutes once a week to simply focus on the subject.  It's your weekly check up to make sure the train is still on the track.

3.  During your weekly appointment make sure and create specific goals and ways to get there.   "I want more sales" or "I want more customers" is a good start but you need to set up a detailed target to make sure you hit it. "I want more "first time " customers in x income bracket" helps yield creating a plan to achieve your goal.

If that is your target you can then say well "Where do I find these people? What are they looking for in a comic book store?"  The more detailed the target the better and easier the plan will be to achieve your goal.

4. Be honest with yourself. If you don't know something about how to achieve your goal go find someone who does.

Some of the most influential people in business period freely admit they don't know squat about the field they are in but they always make sure to have someone around them who does.
