HAVEN DISTRO UPDATE

Sponsored By:

We're well into the new year and only a month away from Haven's 1 year anniversary.  It is a time for retrospect and resolutions.

Looking back, we started literally from scratch.  Haven was the tiniest of tiny operations, with two guys running the business out of a cramped clearing in the back of the warehouse.  In under nine months we tripled our inventory and our warehouse space and our staff.

Looking forward, our goal is to continue to add quality publishers and producers to widen our inventory even further, and more importantly to deepen our stock so our customers can place larger orders with consistent fill rates.

Take a look at our new arrivals list and you'll see the kind of breadth of inventory we strive for.  I want to welcome Dave Sim to our family with the addition of the whole Cerebus run in paperback to our shelves.  I also recommend the Eagle One Media DVDs.  Next month look for more current titles from Antarctic Press.  We are also getting in Arsenic Lullaby trades on request.

So if you don't see something in our catalog yet, let us know and we'll get it.  We know how hard it is for you to get most of these titles, especially on reorder.  That's why we're here.  And that's why we offer them at rock bottom discounts.

Next month look for more current titles from AdHouse Books and Antarctic Press.

Our biggest challenge has been winning the trust of the retailer community.  A lot of store owners out there are still taking a wait and see attitude even after all this time.  I'm not going to waste your time with a sales pitch, though.  I'll let our customers speak for us.

I'd like to invite our other customers out there to send us their feedback for future newsletters, too.

TESTIMONIALS

Haven has been a welcome addition to comics distribution. Since their inception, not a week goes by without Jim Hanley's Universe placing an order. Chock full of alternative publishers, many of whom Diamond Comics does not carry, Haven has become a very valuable tool in finding "everything else" in the comics industry. Haven is a great source for reorders at good discounts and all product arrives in well packed boxes in a timely manner. We will be working with Haven for a while.

Nick Purpura -- Jim Hanley's Universe, New York, NY

Haven Distributors has been a pleasure to work with and extremely beneficial to my business. I had an account previously with Cold Cut and when the management switched to Haven, so did all of my information. I experienced no disruption in service and it couldn't have been easier to order from them! Plus their customer service is top notch! I'll be using Haven for many years to come!

Michael Ring -- Bridge City Comics, Portland, OR

Haven always has our back at Third Eye! In this great time where there's literally a comic for every one, we need as many options as we can get for getting our customer's favorite reads into their hands. The fine folks at Haven provide us with quick and friendly customer service, and most importantly, those harder to come by titles that you can't find elsewhere. These guys don't just care about selling you the books, they care about how well the books sell for you. They're always more than happy to offer advice and input on what'll do well for us.

A Comic To Slate "Paradox"

Arcana Studios, Legacy Filmworks and Bron Management have joined

forces to produce a slate of comic based 'genre' feature films

VANCOUVER (December 22, 2008) - Arcana Studios, an award winning comic book publisher and transmedia producer, has joined forces with Emmy Award winning production company Legacy Filmworks, and production/finance group Bron Management, to produce a slate of five live-action 'genre' feature films based on Arcana comic book titles, starting with the sci-fi thriller “Paradox”, currently in production in British Columbia.

Deboragh Gabler, through her production shingle Legacy Filmworks will produce the slate, alongside Bron Management's Aaron L. Gilbert. Arcana's Founder/Publisher Sean O'Reilly is Executive Producer. All slate films are based on Arcana published sci-fi, thriller, and horror comic book titles.

“Since Aaron joined forces with me at Arcana, we have concentrating on structuring partnerships with top producers like Deboragh Gabler” said O'Reilly. He continued, “We are excited to be working with her on our films, which will introduce and showcase the work of some incredible independent comic book creators. We are also just thrilled to have these projects financed given the state of the current market. It has been tough but Aaron figured out how to make it happen ” Paradox, which was written by Christos Gage and Ruth Fletcher Gage, based on the comic series by Christos Gage, is being directed by Brenton Spencer (a top sci-fi film and TV director, perhaps best known for his work on Stargate: Atlantis and Earth: Final Conflict). The incredible ensemble cast features a host of sci-fi stars, lead by Kevin Sorbo (Andromeda, Hercules); Steph Song (jPod, and co-star with Val Kilmer in the upcoming The Thaw); Christopher Judge (Stargate); Alan C. Peterson (Shooter, Narc, Beautiful Joe); Alisen Down (Battlestar Galactica); and Emilie Ullerup (Sanctuary).

Paradox introduces homicide detective Sean Nault, a cop on a parallel Earth who is investigating a baffling series of murders committed by a means his Earth has never seen before: the power of science. Sean uncovers an apocalyptic plot that will lead him to another dimension and the realization that, unless he prevents it, both earths could well be destroyed.

Legacy' s Gabler said, “I've known Aaron a long time but this is our first endeavor together”. She added “what a great way to start a working partnership on such an exciting and timely series of films, from a dynamic and creative comic book mind like Sean O'Reilly”. Other comic-to-film slate projects include; Chopper, a horror/thriller based on a Martin Shapiro comic going to camera end of January 2009; and Sundown, a western/vampire thriller based on the comic by Jay Busbee, scheduling for April/May 2009. Future slate projects will be announced in the coming months.
The films are being sold internationally by Myriad Pictures who will be working alongside Arcana, Legacy, and Bron to brand these comic-to-film 'genre' films.

Interview with Greatest American Hero's William Katt

This month, Arcana's VP of Operation Mark Poulton interviews Greatest American Hero star and co-writer of the new comic book series, William Katt.

MP: William, you recently started your own comic book company, Catastrophic Comics. Have you always been a fan of comics and is this something you always wanted to do?

WK: There were times in my youth I got myself into trouble and learned to conjure stories to worm my way out of harms way (my father's wrath) - it was right around the time I was discovering Superman and Green Lantern. Story telling and comics somehow had their roots tied together at age 12.

MP: How did you partner up with Arcana Comics on the Greatest American Hero comic book series?

WK: They had the salt - we had the pepper - and we needed both to get it done. They're good people and we're enjoying working together.

MP: You were at SDCC this past summer to announce the series. How was your con experience?

WK: Connie Selleca turned to me on the way to our panel and asked... "what if no one shows up?" She didn't have to worry... as we rounded the corner we say that this huge convention room was filled with hundreds of very gracious wonderful fans giving Bob Culp, Connie Selleca, Dennis Madalone (Stunt Coordinator), and myself a standing ovation as we started our Q&A. The rest of the convention was just as wonderful. Greatest American Hero is still worth celebrating 25 years later. I feel honored.

MP: Do you plan to attend any upcoming conventions?

WK: I'm at Super Megacon in NJ December 6 & 7th and I'll be at the NYCC in February.

MP: The limited series is a re-telling of the Greatest American Hero origin. Will we see Ralph in any new comic book adventures afterwards?

WK: After the first 3 issues, we'll start telling new stories as if the show never ended. Only difference will be that it is 2009 but the characters are all still by and large the same. They bad guys will be a little more prevalent - a little more dangerous.

MP: Why do you think after all of these years the fans are still passionate about the television series?

WK: It's like when you fall in love with your first rock band - Led Zeppelin - Bad Company - Grateful Dead - it's something that stays with you - don't know if we can explain it. I just try and pay homage to it and remember it's all about the fans.

MP: You were recently on Heroes, what else can fans expect from you in the New Year?

WK: "Mythology Wars" will be released later in the spring - and then of course more Greatest American Hero issues. I'm also asking for a few billion dollars from congress since everyone else is... I promise to share it with the fans.

MP: Thank you for your time, William! And fans, remember to pick up Greatest American Hero #1 on shelves December 17th!

Beware! Plan 9 From Outer Space Strikes Again

Bluewater Productions along with Legend Films is developing the sequel to the cult film "Plan 9 From Outer Space." This oversized issue titled "Plan 9 From Outer Space ... Strikes Again" is scheduled for a March 2009 release. The team will be writers Chad Helder & Darren G. Davis and drawn by Giovanni P. Timpano, both are alumni of the Vincent Price Presents series. Colors by Alex Sollazzo as well as a cover by Nate Watson (Scream Queen for BOOM! Studios).

The film Plan 9 from Outer Space is a 1959 science fiction/horror film written, produced, and directed by Edward D. Wood, Jr.. Because of its script, acting, special effects, and multiple production errors visible in the final version of the film, Plan 9 from Outer Space is often regarded as a leading candidate for the title of "worst movie ever made." It has also earned Wood a posthumous Golden Turkey Award as the worst director ever.

Bluewater describes the oversized one-shot, fifty years after the alien invasion unleashed the unspeakable horror of Plan 9, a corrupt team of government scientists reactivates the zombie horde in order to lure the aliens back to Earth! Their sinister plan: steal the most hideous weapon known to intergalactic intelligence. Only conspiracy theorist, Eugene, and his mother, a former professional wrestler, can expose the shadowy agenda of the government as they fight off the growing zombie horde. This time, a new alien force invades Earth: the revolutionary followers of the martyred Eros. Eugene and his mother join forces with the last remaining heroes of a corrupt government. Together, they must thwart Plan 9 once again, with all life in the universe hanging in the balance.

"Entering into the mind-space of Ed Wood was a huge thrill," said co-writer Chad Helder. "I watched Plan 9 numerous times in order to seed my subconscious mind with Wood's extraordinary imagination that is 100% campy exuberance. After collaborating with Darren Davis on some character ideas, I went full-blast into a campy world of aliens, zombies, professional wrestlers, and mad scientists. I am really happy with the result.

"We wanted to pay homage to the film and since there were so many errors in the film - we had to add some into the comic." Said co-writer Darren G. Davis "Some of the mistakes will be obvious but you are going to have to get your magnified glass to catch everything. This is something that has not be done in comics on purpose."

"Everyone knows about Plan 9 and why it is called the 'worst movie ever made' said artist Giovanni P. Timpano "Plan 9 From Outer Space features aliens, zombies, vampires, ghouls, super bombs and a lot more!

Studio 407's critically acclaimed series Hybrid hits stores on February 25th in trade format. Earlier this year, Myriad Pictures and Studio 407, formed a first-look partnership to make full-length live-action motion pictures. Hybrid is set to start filming next year with Ernie Barbarash (Cube Zero, They Wait) on board to direct.

"This was a real opportunity to take an old fashioned genre, the classic monster story, and bring it into the 21st century. says Hybrid writer Peter Kwong. "The 'hybrid" is unlike any creature that you've ever seen; yet, like all classical monsters, it's very much rooted in contemporary fears and anxieties. That always makes it more interesting as a writer, and, I hope, the audience will agree."

Hybrid is described as: When four friends decide to rent a schooner for the day, everything is smooth sailing until they encounter a derelict ship adrift in the ocean - a massive trawler that looks as if it had been dragged from the bottom of the sea. When they spot a frightened little girl waving at them from the bow, they have no choice but to investigate. As they get closer to the ship, they discover that the girl is not alone.

Comics Bulletin says "If you're a fan of old school, creature feature movies and like a little more monster in your horror, then this is a good book for you."

Ain't it Cool News calls Hybrid: "A good, old fashioned horror story... delivering on all levels."

Power of the Valkyrie Comes Home to BlueWater

Bluewater Productions is going back to the books that made them popular. Last week it was announced that the “10th Muse” is back but also “Legend of Isis” is on the way this summer as an ongoing series. To top it off “Power of the Valkyrie” is geared for a February 2009 comeback. Originally published through Arcana, it comes home to Bluewater. Written by Chris Studabaker, drawn by Mannix and colored by Farés Ramírez.

Bluewater describes the new “Power of the Valkyrie” series as, philosophic action and adventure continues in this new saga starring Bluewater’s Norse hero and written by Day Prize-nominee Chris Studabaker. Suzanne Bancroft is going to die, and the end of the world will be her fault. A relentless demi-god has declared he will murder Suzanne and her death will begin a chain of events culminating in Ragnarok. Worse yet – her murderer can see her fate. While still trying to understand her new role as the Valkyrie, Suzanne must seek the true nature of fate and ask herself a hard question: how do you fight a battle you’re destined to lose?

“Valkyrie has been a treat to write”, says writer Chris Studabaker. “A lot of use having passing familiarity with Norse mythology, but we used some very different storytelling here, interweaving ancient stories and modern narrative. The idea of modernizing ancient gods provides a lot of fodder for big fights, but the most important aspect of the Norse pantheon has always been their striking humanity and that’s what we’re exploring”.

Studabaker continues, “All these ideas about people, myth, fate, and circles come together incredibly in the full mirrored layout of issue four and his treatment of the mirrored ideas and page layouts are really beautiful. The Fate of Gods and Men is about just that – what history and fate mean to us, our heroes, our gods, and how we comes to terms with the answers”.

“Valkyrie is the darkest of all the Bluewater female titles”, said Darren G. Davis creator of the character. “We wanted to do something that was different from our other classic characters, so we gave this series a more adult feel”.

Indy Publisher Guarantees 12 Issue Run

Boston Based HBComics™ makes bold claim about new “Lazerman™” Comic

In an industry where the future of new titles are uncertain, one indy publisher has addressed the concern in an unusual way; by guaranteeing at least a 12 issue run of their new title, “Lazerman.” HBComics, a Boston based publisher, posted this guarantee on their Myspace blog in response to feedback from their readers about a new title’s chance of success.

“I've had more than a few people echo a concern that I've shared about indy comics for some time…Who wants to start reading a book and be forced to wonder if you'll ever finish the story?” Artist Chris Hebert noted on the HBComics™ Myspace blog. “(So) we are guaranteeing at least 12 issues of Lazerman ™.”

Sighting a minimal production cost, and cost free online distribution techniques, the independent publishers assure that this is a completely attainable promise, claiming the only obstacle would be their own determination to complete the workload. The entire blog can be read at http://blogs.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=blog.view&friendID=30564833&blogID=451198961

Lazerman™, the title in question, is the story of an awkward comic book geek who, in a bizarre twist of fate, ends up with super-powers of his very own. The title promises to lovingly satirize the super hero genre, while at the same time provide a light hearted hero story in the tradition of classic silver age comics. The title, due out this January, has already made an early appearance at several conventions, including Wizard World Texas, where the book sold out its exclusive convention printing. Lazerman is available through Haven Distributors (www.havendistro.com).

About HBComics™: HBComics™ is an independent comic book publisher, founded by two brothers from Boston. More information on the company, or the titles being produced, can be found at www.hbcomics.com

RETAILER TIPS: "HEY BARTENDER" - POUR ME ANOTHER

So in many ways a good comic store owner is like a good bartender. They have your books waiting for you when you get there. They know your tastes. They inevitably wind up listening to your problems. Consumers mean to just go in and pick up their books and often wind up lingering over the latest releases checking them out. Have you ever wondered why comic store long term consumer relationships are often closer knit then other businesses? You are selling escapist pleasure product that releases on a weekly basis. Bars would KILL for new booze on a weekly basis. That being said; look around your store. Is it inviting? Would people feel comfortable hanging out there? Do you take at least the time a bartender would chatting with people? If someone regularly gets a SupermanGin and Tonic” can you recommend another Superman like book that they may like? Look to your local bar promotions to get an idea of specials you can run.

You can even come up with cocktails as your specials. “1 Xmen book, 1 Spiderman Title, and a pinch of any Marvel mini series and you have the – Hero whammy special!”

Let your store be the place that everyone feels special and you will have them showing up like Norm on Cheers.
