HAVEN DISTRO
UPDATE |
Sponsored By: |
|
Hello
everyone! I know many of you are getting
ready to jet out to San Diego Comic-Con,
as am I, so I'll try to make it
quick.
Speaking of SDCC, The Antidote
Trust has invited me to sit on their
panel at San Diego Comic-Con on Thursday
July 23 at 7:00 pm in Room 5 A-B. We'll
be there to talk about the indie
publishing biz. Apparently at past
panels they got more questions about
distribution than anything else. So this
year I'll be on hand to pull back the
curtain on the (until now) mysterious
and illusive world of wholesale
distribution.
Still
on the subject of conventions, we are
going to be sponsoring Chicago's own
version of INDIE ISLAND in 2010 at
McCormick Place for C2E2. We're working with Reed
Exhibitions to offer space for small
press and self publishers that we carry.
Space is limited and I predict will be
in high demand, so that's why I'm
sending out word already. Some of the
spots are reserved for indie veterans
who had a seat at the original Island
run by Cold Cut. And yes... we'll have
the palm tree.
I'm
guessing a lot of you may have already
caught the blurb in Game Informer
Magazine last month which mentioned
Sonic The Hedgehog as the longest
running video game comic book still in
print. Sonic is living up to his rep,
running out so fast I can barely keep
them on the shelf. So as soon you see
something "On Order"... grab it!
I am
very pleased to announce that we've
welcomed a new publisher to the family.
We're now officially carrying all
Devil's Due back stock.
So as not to step on any agreements with
other distributors, we are not listing
advance orders or books that just came
out this month. Once any issue is older
than 30 days and you're looking to keep
stock on your shelves, I'm your hookup.
You'll find the list of what we have in
stock in our online ordering system at
www.havendistro.com! Don't
expect Hack/Slash to stay there too
long.
And
finally, there's a beta version of our
Online Catalog Reader linked off our
website. It's very shiny, especially in
Firefox and Safari.
Take
care!

TESTIMONIALS |
|
Haven Distributors have
been a phenomenal resource to work with. You can
pinpoint when we started using haven in November of
2008 that our sales and inventory turnover increased
significantly since we have added haven’s comic
titles to our sales list. The quality of the comics
and the rareness in finding them in a store, makes
using Haven Distribution for our online and offline
sales channel everything that a comic book store
could ever want. The below graph is just the monthly
sales by number of books sold from haven, and these
are just the titles provided by Haven, and they have
been integral to the success of our store. Without
the comics, service and support provided by Haven,
our sales would not be showing a 200% Year over Year
sales increase. Few stores can afford to turn down
an extra 120 sales for the month.

Haven carries titles
that go beyond the tired commercial comic books, our
sales demonstrate that there is a pent up demand for
hard to find, unusual and independent titles in the
online sales environment. That is what makes Haven
extraordinarily valuable as a resource; people are
looking for these titles online, in multiple online
sales environments. If you are serious about selling
online, you will want to add Haven’s titles to your
mix. I am a member of the Northwest Entrepreneurial
Advisors Network, and I advise companies on a daily
basis on how to do business better, in regards to
Haven Distribution, I would not change anything.
Thanks Haven, I owe you coffee.

The People
Have Spoken
|

Action-adventure series We The
People set for August release
Outlaw
Entertainment has tapped into the
past to bring readers a compelling
story of redemption and social
reform, set against a modern
American city where corruption has
become the norm. Scheduled for an
August release, We The
Peoplewill introduce the
world to a new team of heroes... One
where the only power they wield
comes from their unrelenting desire
for change.
In
reality, the legendary characters of
Zorro, Robin Hood, and Sinbad the
Sailor are not just the stuff of
fiction, but instead, a long lineage
of skilled protectors who vow
justice for the innocent. Now the
mask, the bow, and the sea will call
out a to a new generation, and in
the process a group of unlikely
heroes will arise, one that promises
to clean up a city where the streets
have run rampant with corruption and
injustice.
"We The
People is exactly the right story at
exactly the right time," states
We The People
co-creator and Outlaw Entertainment
COO, Rick A. Villa. "Given the state
of the world right now, it's a
thrilling thought to imagine a real
life group of heroes banding
together to make a difference. They
don't do it with super powers or
fancy gadgetry... They do it because
it's the right thing to do. It
really is an old school-style story
for a very new school-style
audience."

Supreme Discount |

ATOMIC POP ART
ENTERTAINMENT LOWERS THE COVER
PRICE OF THE
SUPREMACY ISSUE 2 DOWN TO $1.99
Atomic Pop Art
Entertainment proudly announces
today that issue two of The
Supremacy comic book series will be
sold with a cover price of $1.99
USD. The original price was set at
$3.99 USD, which is the common
standard going rate for comic books
presently. Tracy Duty, the President
and Publisher of APA, said "The
sales for issue one were way above
expected expectations. We jumped in
the deep end of the pool head first
when we were soliciting for issue
one and when we got back the orders
we were more then happy. Most of the
retailers that pre-ordered the first
issue sold out in a matter of a few
days. In fact, Graham Cracker Comics
out of Illinois sold out of their
pre-orders in just a few hours and
was back on the phone making
re-orders the following week. I'll
be honest we were very surprised
with the response for a small press
and unknown property to do so well.
Everyone involved was ready for the
hard road ahead and the long haul."

Interview
with Mike Raicht About The Stuff of
Legend
|

Introduction
I
recently had the pleasure of
Interviewing Army of Darkness
writer, Mike Raicht. Mike's became a
pretty good mate of mine over the
last couple of months and has given
me valuable advice on my aspirations
to becoming a writer.
Not too
long ago Mike gave me a sneak read
at his upcoming book "The Stuff of
Legend" to review. I looked at the
cover and fell in love with the
artwork; I read it and fell in love
with the story and characters. Now
that The Stuff of Legend is almost
ready to be released, I thought now
would be a good a time as any to get
a sly interview with the awesome
Mike Raicht. Here's what he had to
say...
Interview
Liam Bradley:
Before we start the official
interview, Mike, could you tell us a
bit about yourself?
Mike Raicht:
I'm a husband to Nancy and father to
Austin. I don't envy either of them.
I enjoy Halo 3 and zombies way too
much. I am a big fan of Syracuse
University sports due to going to
all their basketball and football
games with my dad as a kid. And I
have an undergrad degree from
LeMoyne College in English/Creative
Writing and a Masters in Creative
Writing/Fiction from Long Island
University. I worked for a time in
journalism covering local government
and sports.
LB:
Were you a big comics
fan as a kid? If so, then what was
your favourite comic?
MR:
I was a really big fan. My mom and
dad tended to pick comics up for me
all the time. From Star Wars to the
Hulk. I became completely hooked on
X-Men at about the age of 8 at the
local news stand. The lady there
allowed kids to get a pull list
before they were really fashionable.
Mine got a little large and I
eventually had to trim it a bit.
Sixty cents to Seventy-five cents
was steep for a kid with no job. I
did however get very thin from
saving my lunch money.
LB:
What made you decide
to write comics?
MR:
I think I always knew it was
something I wanted to be involved in
but I didn't believe it was a
realistic possibility. I loved the
stories as a kid. I played GI Joe,
Dungeon and Dragons, and X-Men with
my friends on my street. In high
school I did the jock thing for a
bit and had a girlfriend so I was
kind of a closet comic reader. But I
always kept up with the books. I
graduated high school in '93 so I
was hip deep in all of the X-Men and
Image craziness.
I
originally went to college to become
some kind of doctor, which is
frightening. When I realized I was
horrible in science and math, or at
least really didn't care about them,
I found a new path and really got
into writing. Mostly fiction but
also some journalism stuff. I was
good at it. I won some awards for
fiction and received a scholarship
to attend grad school. From there it
made sense to write in the industry
I loved the most. Simple, right?
LB:
You mentioned to me
before that you had an internship at
Marvel. How did that come about?
MR:
After getting
accepted to LIU for my Masters I
decided I would kick myself if I
didn't try to get into comics. I
researched getting an internship at
Marvel. As luck would have it, an
alumni of LIU was an assistant
editor at Marvel and hooked me up
with an interview. I interviewed
with Bobbie Chase and Brian Smith
and scored the internship.
I
interned for a semester with Bobbie
Chase and Brian Smith who were in
charge of a lot of the Marvel Heroes
including Iron Man, the Hulk and
Fantastic Four. (Most importantly,
Brian and I are great friends and
collaborators to this day. I am
currently working on multiple
projects with him including THE
STUFF OF LEGEND). Then the second
semester, I was in the office of
Jason Liebig and Lysa Hawkins. They
were the secondary X-office.

Vietnam
Journal Returns |

Finally, the
acclaimed series of Vietnam
Journal from Don Lomax,
nominated for a Harvey
Award, will be presented in
a series of graphic novels
collecting the entire run.
Vietnam Journal is a look at
the Vietnam War through the
eyes of a war journalist as
it chronicles the lives and
events of soldiers on the
front line during the
Vietnam War. Picked by
Entertainment Weekly as "a
graphic novel you should
own" and recommended by the
Military History Book Club,
Vietnam Journal is written
and drawn by Don Lomax, a
Vietnam War veteran.
The
Vietnam Journal series
originally was released by
Apple Comics and ran for 16
issues. Apple Comics
collected the first eight
issues into two trades and
Byron Preiss' iBooks
collected the first six
issues into their version of
Vietnam Journal but
Transfuzion plans to keep
the trades compatible with
the original storylines
which were broken down into
four to six issues each. The
first volume of Vietnam
Journal, "Indian Country"
collects will run 140 pages
and retail for $17.99. It
will be available via
Diamond Previews for October
shipping.
Transfuzion
Publisher, Gary Reed, said
he has always been a fan of
Vietnam Journal and is
enthusiastic about
collecting the entire
series. "As a retailer when
Vietnam Journal came out, it
was always a great seller
for us and every issue was
featured in our stores
because it was something
that appealed to a wide
audience. As a publisher
(Caliber Comics), it was
always a title that I wished
I had published." One of the
imprints from Caliber was
Tome Press which released
over 70 issues of material
that included historical and
biographical works.
Transfuzion
Publishing officially
launched in the summer of
2007 and has released over
25 graphic novels including
the works of H.P. Lovecraft,
Sherlock Holmes, and other
war related books dealing
with the Zulu Wars and World
War II's Battle of the
Bulge. "Vietnam Journal
epitomizes what I want to do
with Transfuzion," said
Reed, "in that it presents
great material which is made
available to new audiences,
both in the comics market
and outside the traditional
market."

Surrogates Movie Update |

Seeing a major motion
picture spring out of a Top
Shelf series is exciting to
us on any day and the
Surrogates is clearly
shaping up to be a very
interesting film. Add to
that mix Bruce Willis, Ving
Rhames, Radha Mitchell and
Rosamund Pike and we're in!
The story? The year is 2054,
and life is reduced to a
data feed. The fusing of
virtual reality and
cybernetics has ushered in
the era of the personal
surrogate, android
substitutes that let users
interact with the world
without ever leaving their
homes. It's a perfect world,
and it's up to Detectives
Harvey Greer and Pete Ford
of the Metro Police
Department to keep it that
way. But to do so they'll
need to stop a
techno-terrorist bent on
returning society to a time
when people lived their
lives instead of merely
experiencing them.
As we count down September
29th release, here's a look
at the latest film poster
featuring Willis...

Owly Gets
Animated |

Owly,
the kindhearted star of the
award-winning graphic novel series
by Andy Runton, will come to life in
an animated short at the San Diego
Comic-Con on July 23-26.
It
was jointly announced today by Chris
Staros, Publisher of Top Shelf
Productions and Junichi Yanagihara,
Executive Producer at Sprite
Animation Studios that the loveable
Owly and his unlikely best friend
Wormy will be animated in a
brand-new original segment directed
by Moto Sakakibara and storyboarded
by creator Andy Runton. Prominently
featured will be Runton's innovative
"Pictomation," a storytelling device
in which the characters' thoughts
and feelings are animated with
iconic and expressive images rather
than dialogue, enabling fans of all
ages, languages, and backgrounds to
enjoy the show.
"I'm absolutely overjoyed to be
working with the entire Sprite team.
Over the past months, we've worked
very closely to make sure Owly was
faithfully translated to 3D. Every
little detail was important to them,
and the end result blows me away!
They've created an animation that
captures the pure essence of Owly in
ways I never thought possible. It's
amazing to see Owly and Wormy come
to life like this. The level of
artistry at Sprite is incredible."
said creator Andy Runton.

Review of The Deadbeat |

Publisher Summary:
A humorous and poignant 'slice of
super life' graphic novel, THE
DEADBEAT revolves around a
down-on-his-luck former superhero
and his long-lost daughter. As
tempers flare and they
come to
terms with one another, they realize
that the events that drove a wedge
between them years ago were just the
tip of the iceberg.
Review:
Jeremy Massie shows us that even the
greatest of super heroes can make
bad choices when faced with tragedy.
Through a tongue and cheek vision of
the super hero genre, we follow a
fallen hero who demonstrates that
just because you have strength and
power doesn't mean you always show
strength of character. Embarking on
a new chapter in his life when his
daughter, thought lost forever,
turns up with powers of her own and
a life scarred by his lack of
responsibility, is now having to
learn to make her own choices and
the consequences that go along with
them.
Super
heroes who misuse their powers or
neglect their responsibilities is
nothing new to the super hero genre,
just pick up almost any Dark Horse
or Marvel title and you'll probably
find that. That being said I liked
Massie's spin on it, his satirizing
approach to the characters and the
genre is well done without feeling
too campy with a plot that has a
real back bone to it. His fallen
hero is very relatable leading you
to develop sympathy for the tragic
loss in his life as well as
irritation and anger for the fact
that he dug the hole he is in
himself. Which of course directly
affects the kind of life and issues
his daughter grows up with and
carries in her life. Their
interaction and emotion behind it
feels real and unforced supporting
the straight-forward language of the
script, making them feel like
ordinary people who just happen to
have extraordinary powers.
Massie's
artistic style for this project
harkens back to a more classic style
of comic art, reminding me of
something you might see in a Sunday
serial. I found this escape from the
high gloss and polish that you find
in most main stream works
refreshing, drawing attention to the
story being told and not the latest
digital effects available. I am
definitely interested in seeing
where Massie takes this project and
I look forward to reading more. I
would also encourage anyone who
enjoys a good satire to pick it up
and judge for your self.

Jesus
Hates Zombies Featuring Lincoln Hates
Werewolves Vol. 1 Review |
What
a gem in disguise this was!
I will admit that I figured
it just uses Jesus as a
gimmick for sales. So if
that's true nice job because
the stories that are found
between the thicker sheets
of paper are fantastic. If
you don't believe me, ask me
how much I hate gimmick
books.
Artwork: 4.4 out of
5
What really caught
me was the difference from
the cover art to the
insides. I felt that one of
the two reasons this clicked
to me was the interior art.
It's cartoonish and for
stories as bizarre as these
were it works. I don't want
some realistic looking Jesus
beating up the undead. I
love how it was handled.
Even the nice little back up
Lincoln story at the end
worked so nicely. Well done.
Story: 4.0 out of 5
So here is where I was
worried the most. I figured
going into it a Jesus story
= boring and Lincoln was
only added for a more
obscure referance to sell
books. Lindsay's writing
made me feel like a fool
thinking that. The story was
well written, full of nice
jokes. If I have to be down
on one thing, it was the
jumping back and forth
between the two stories. It
makes me think that in vol.
2 they will intertwine but I
found it semi distracting.
Overall though I liked it.
Dying Breath: 4.2
out of 5
So how do you lock me in for
the long haul? Horror and
humor. That simple. This
book works so well on all
levels. I can honestly say I
am searching for ways to dig
up some more cash so I can
get Vol. 2. Bottom line,
great story and great art
and one new fan.

Ghostface #1-2 Review
|
"A
vintage pulp opera of dangerous
dames, malicious mugs and hard
boiled heroics."
I liked this story from the two
issues I read and can say I see some
good potential in what is to come.
While it doesn't follow my typical
horror style it seems more along the
Pulp lines of say The Goon with it's
style but also mixes in a nice
1920's gangster feel.
Artwork: 3.7 out of 5
I liked the feel of the artwork in
these issues. It really sets the
tone for the story and just nicely
fits the era. I will mention though
that issue #1 had some panels where
I didn't quite get what was going on
but by the end of issue #2 I really
felt that the artist had found his
legs and got a better grasp on it
all.
Story: 3.8 out of 5
I can't really say I have read a
good deal of stories on this kind of
topic. The issues though contained
what I would expect to find though.
Kinda like that art I felt issue #2
was stronger and I am glad I was
able to read them together. I think
that there are some holes that fill
in as the story goes along, but from
what I read it was strong enough to
gain my attention and hold it from
start to finish and I am intrigued
to see what comes next.
Dying Breath: 3.8 out of 5
A bit of a shaky start but the books
quickly get rolling and it pulled my
interest in. Then by the end of
issue #2 I was left wondering what
was next. Isn't that what you want
from a comic? Overall I liked what I
read. I think it fits the genre
nicely and if your a fan of the Pulp
Noir style check it out.

RETAILER TIPS:
ARE YOU A ONE HIT WONDER? |
|
Now for the
“M” word that everyone dreads and few
completely understand.
That’s right. Marketing.
You’ve sent out mailers. You’ve hung
signs sent to you by publishers.
You’ve put together a subscription bin.
You’ve offered discounts. What else can
you do?
A lot. Be creative. Don’t limit yourself
(except where a budget limits your
marketing for you – you’re obviously not
going to be able to have sky writing
touting your store over the
World Series). And don’t get
stuck just doing a monthly mailer
because that’s worked for you somewhat
in the past and you don’t feel like
trying something new.
Try something new! Contests. In-store
events (even if it seems goofy). Coupons
in the local alternative newspaper. Ads
or coupons in local high school
newspapers (that are usually cheap).
In-store newsletters (get a regular
customer to do it for trade). Heck, look
at what other stores are doing and stea---,
I mean, borrow the idea for yourself.
And don’t forget to check with the
various publishers and manufacturers out
there. Many of them have co-op programs
that will help offset some of your
costs.
Don’t be a one-hit wonder, using one
marketing idea over and over.
Experiment with a variety of
marketing ideas.
Oh, one last thing, marketing is
sometimes hard to effectively gauge.
Don’t get discouraged even if you don’t
see a 1000% jump in sales the day after
an ad (or whatever) runs.. Much of
marketing is just making an impact. The
old rule of marketing says that its
purpose is to persuade or remind people
to take some action to satisfy some need
or want. (I believe the order is to
create Attention, Interest, Desire, and
then Action.) The first one – attention
-- happens with every activity you do.
Even if you don’t see it in your sales
immediately, have faith that you are
getting noticed.
Ultimately, this will translate into
action from current customers and new
ones.
