HAVEN DISTRO
UPDATE |
|
Okay so
maybe thinking that the newsletter would
get out early during convention season
wasn't such a great idea. Ironically,
things like this newsletter get bumped
down the priority list because business
really started to ramp up this month.
We've been running seven days a week to
keep orders flowing.
I want to introduce some folks that
brought in to help manage purchasing,
marketing, and sales. First we signed
Tony Shenton to be our new sales rep.
He's been reaching out to more retailers
and has already shown promising
results. So promising that we've had to
step up our game to meet the sudden
demand.
Lys Fulda of the Sphinx Group has been
our marketing consultant for awhile now,
and has now added on the role of
purchasing coordinator for a number of
our larger suppliers. Brant Fowler is
also adding to his job role with
supplier relations and marketing
efforts. He will be your new point of
contact for new publisher submissions,
small press updates, and for
solicitations and cover art for the
shopping cart and catalog. Choosing
Solicits and Submissions in the contact
form should now go to him.
Wizard World was great for us, too. I
got to put some faces to names of our
legacy suppliers, bring back some
familiar faces, and welcome some new
ones. We are excited to soon be
carrying Eagle One Media animated comic
DVDs and Ape Entertainment books plus
many more. Keep an eye on our new
releases and spotlight publishers in the
coming months.
Speaking of conventions... the shop's
going to be closed up from July 22-27
for San Diego. So get in your orders
before then.
If you're attending the con, look for us
in the old Cold Cut booth, 1901 in the
IP Pavilion. We'll also be hosting Mike
Kingston with his Markosia title,
Headlocked and Terry Cronin with
Students of the Unusual. |

novels to the graphic format.

build upon and enhance the worlds of
popular works in a manner that longtime

The company
was founded in 2000 by Ernst, Les, David
and Pascal Dabel, four brothers with a

INDEPENDENT COMIC
NEWS |

Robert Jordan's Bestselling Wheel of
Time Series joins the Dabel Brothers
Line-up!
|
Dabel
Brothers Publishing announced today
that they will adapt Robert
Jordan's bestselling Wheel of Time
series, which has sold more
than 14 million copies in North
America alone, into comic book
format. The first issue is scheduled
to release in December 2008.
The Wheel of Time began in
1990 with the publication of The
Eye of the World; ten more
volumes have followed. The most
recent four books of the series have
reached #1 on the New York Times
hardcover bestseller list. It is the
story of a world – both our past,
and our future – in which the battle
between the Light and the Shadow
must be fought every day; and of the
people, both ordinary and
extraordinary, who must fight that
battle. Jordan wrote eleven volumes
of the series and one prequel; he
was unable to complete the twelfth
and final volume before his death in
2007. That volume, A Memory of
Light, will be completed by
Brandon Sanderson,
a writer chosen by Jordan's widow
and editor, Harriet McDougal,
and published by Tor Books in 2009.

The
Dabel Brothers published a comic
adaptation of Jordan's A New
Spring in March 2005. In
conjunction with that project,
Robert Jordan provided them with
extensive notes for use in further
possible publications, including
character descriptions and other
visuals.
"I'm delighted to be working with
the Dabel Brothers! Their work is
splendid. Robert Jordan liked it
enormously," says Harriet McDougal.
Graphic-novel collected editions of
the individual comics will be
distributed by Del Rey,
an imprint of Ballantine Books at
the Random House Publishing Group.
The deal was negotiated by Jordan's
agent, Nat Sobel.
Robert Jordan was
born in 1948 in Charleston, South
Carolina. He taught himself to read
when he was four with the incidental
aid of a twelve-years-older brother,
and was tackling Mark Twain and
Jules Verne by five. He was a
graduate of The Citadel, The
Military College of South Carolina,
with a degree in physics. He served
two tours in Vietnam with the U.S.
Army; among his decorations are the
Distinguished Flying Cross with
bronze oak leaf cluster, the Bronze
Star with "V" and bronze oak leaf
cluster, and two Vietnamese
Gallantry Crosses with Palm. A
history buff, he also wrote dance
and theater criticism. He enjoyed
the outdoor sports of hunting,
fishing and sailing, and the indoor
sports of poker, chess, pool, and
pipe collecting. He began writing in
1977 and continued until his death
on September 16, 2007.

SLG To
Publish Its BIGGEST Graphic Novel Ever! |
Setsuko is
your ordinary Japanese freshman in high
school. During the day you can find her
studying half-heartedly for exams, going
to class, socializing with her peers,
battling off giant killer robots,
preventing global conspiracies from
running rampant, eating lunch,
destroying alien invaders, doing
homework, annihilating restless spirits
of the dead, and other mundane things.
Oh yeah, she also manages to babysit
sometimes at a very reasonable rate of
$10 per hour.
Using only his pop culture knowledge of
Japan (having never visited the place
before) creator Andy Ristaino (Life of a
Fetus) brings us his own unique
perspective of the land of the rising
sun through Setsuko's daily adventures
in SLG Publishing's special oversized
printing of The Babysitter. But why
attempt to recreate an entire country
that he hasn't visited? "It seemed like
a good idea to make the comic about
living in Japan based solely on my pop
culture knowledge that I've gathered
from a lifetime of studying far too much
manga and anime," Ristaino says.

The book's
unique art style, inspired Will Eisner
and Ristaino's own studies of
claustrophobic art, is intended to
parody and deconstruct established manga
conventions. Where manga tends to be
small in size, easily read, with clean
art lines, The Babysitter represents the
complete opposite in its mammoth
presentation, dizzying art panels, and
bold style. "I wanted to create a book
that you couldn't just skip ahead and
read the last panel to find out what
happens… something you had to translate,
concentrate on…like one of those magic
eye puzzles," says Ristaino.
The Babysitter Collection (ISBN
9781593621346) arrives in stores this
August at 112 pages and measures at a
colossal 9.5 x 15 inches. The volume
collects issues #1-3 of The Babysitter
and is packed with special features
including concept art and a brand new
full length color story. It will be
available in bookstores, comic stores
and at SLG Publishing's website,
www.slgcomic.com
SLG Publishing is a San Jose, CA based
publisher of comic books, graphic novels
and related merchandise. Established in
1986 some of SLG's more notable comics
and creators have included Johnny the
Homicidal Maniac Jhonen Vasquez, Lenore
Roman Dirge, Milk & Cheese Evan Dorkin
and Zombies Calling Faith Erin Hicks.

Change in direction for
dabelbrothers.com |
|
Things
change. In everything from comics to
life that is a fact.
Fact with this website, is it had to
change. The Internet is getting more and
more advanced, and the and fact is that
so are the hackers and bots of the
world. This website over the months had
bee attacked by spam, phishing attacks,
and adult content spammed across the
forums. Last week it hit critical mass
as the site was corrupted by 100s of
files hitting the site at once.
A decision was made to deep six the old
site, and start fresh. The Dabel
Brothers are very much concerned with
the user experience, and are deeply
saddened if the fans are hurt or
offended. This step was taken to be sure
that a 100% safe environment was built
and could be maintained.
It's also a good opportunity to refine
and hone the site, to make it easier to
navigate and easier to get the
information that fans want and need.
Look for more additions and fine tuning
over the weeks and months ahead.
And thanks for being the best fans in
comics.

RETAILER TIPS:
ADVERTISING - GIVE IT TIME TO WORK |
|
All too
often, we hear "I advertised in that
book once.. it didn't work."
Advertising is about repetition to get
your message through to it's audience.
There is no
guaranteed number of times advertising
will
get your message across either so you
need to create a message that works as
well as a way to gauge response.
Make sure
your advertising message has a special
code word or coupon in it so you can see
how many people respond to your ad!
