HAVEN DISTRO UPDATE

Sponsored By:

This month we've been hard at work back at the drawing board with the Enemi catalog.  While our first two issues got generally good feedback, we needed a design that would dance off the page, slap customers across the face and scream "HEY! Previews ain't the only game in town anymore!!"

And thus COMICS! was born... http://havendistro.com/catalog.html

In addition to listing more of our inventory, Enemi Entertainment will continue to provide magazine content in the form of interviews, features, and reviews.

Unlike Previews where the big publishers get all the best content and the little guys get buried, the features will be in the front on their own.  The products -- both back stock and advance orders-- open with 3 staff-picked ROTATING Showcase Publishers, and the rest A-Z, listed with a much friendlier index with bold listings that lets everyone stand out.

If you're a retailer and you want to make sure you get one, call or email me!  This issue will also be available for sale direct from Enemi at retail or at wholesale to stores through Haven.

If you're a publisher that has not yet sent in their print-ready cover art and solicitation, call or email me!

If you want to really make a statement with an advertisement in our premier issue... call or email me!

In other news... Besides the ever-growing list of new arrivals and Advance Orders below, we've got a couple of big titles on order.  Look out for the the second printings of Bluewater's crazy-popular Fem Force titles because you know your other supplier won't be able to fill your reorders on them.

Also... Sonic and Knuckles are coming to Haven!  To see our initial offerings, Browse by Publisher in the web cart and click Archie Comics.  Be the first in line when they arrive.

Have a Happy St Patty's Day!

-- Lance

PUBLISHER SPOTLIGHT

Launching in April of 2000 with a flagship Issue#Zero sampler in April 2000, UK based Com.x released its first titles into the comic marketplace in February 2001, including Bazooka Jules, Razorjack and Puncture, followed by Sky Between Branches, Codename: Babetool, N-jin, the collected edition of The Last American, and the much talked about Cla$$war in 2002.

After a long publishing hiatus, Com.X is coming back with a collected edition of Cla$$war and a trade of Razorjack, both of which you can read more about below. They also debuted a brand-new 88 page graphic novel, created by Gregory S. Baldwin, entitled PATH.

Through changing artists and a robbery that forced them to shut their doors for years, Com.X has survived and is ready to step back into the world of independent comic book publishing.

Press Release

RAZORJACK : The Collected Edition (SC)

Created and Illustrated by John Higgins

A sequence of bizarre events create an unstable nexus that enables the death-bitch, Razorjack, and her twisted handmaidens the opportunity to finally break through into our world – the most important dimension of them all – The Core Dimension.

Three college kids inadvertently create the opening from the alternate universe of The Twist Dimension and become a focus for the evil that is Razorjack.

Maverick cops, Frame and Ross, are assigned a disturbingly horrific multiple-murder case which draws them into what is potentially the final battle between good and evil.

For the first time, Com.x collects John Higgins’ original selfpublished story and Com.x issues #1 and #2 into one, complete graphic novel. Also includes new story and art by John created exclusively for this book.

Available March 2009

Retail Price: USD $12.99 / UK £8.99

Love and Capes Wedding - You're Invited!

You are cordially invited…
to attend the wedding of Mark and Abby in Love and Capes #12.

You might not have been invited to Lois and Clark’s wedding. You probably couldn’t attend Peter and MJ’s wedding (and, if you did, you don’t remember it.). But you can be in attendance for the comic book wedding of the 21st century! The Crusader and Abby are getting married in Love and Capes #12, coming out in December 2009, and you could be there.

Tickets to this wedding are limited and seating is first come, first served. Cost is just $40 per couple or $25 per single. No "crashers" permitted. To be part of this special event, RSVP by sending a photo of yourself, along with your payment, and you will be drawn into the wedding scene cover of Love and Capes #12 and mentioned by name at the end of the book.

To commemorate this special event, and to show our appreciation for the fans of Love and Capes, artist Thom Zahler will be creating a special limited edition 11 x 17 print of the wedding cover. All "attendees" will be sent a signed and numbered print to commorate their attendance at this "super" celebration. Interested attendees can also look for Thom Zahler at the Free Comic Book Day event May 2nd at Rogues Gallery Comics in Austin, Texas , where he’ll have his camera ready to snap your photo on site.

If response warrants, an alternate version of the cover illustration (featuring Mark in his tuxedo, rather than his Crusader uniform) will be created to handle the overflow crowd.

Please RSVP by May 25, 2009.

Top Shelf News for March 2009

NATE POWELL'S SWALLOW ME WHOLE NOMINATED FOR LA TIMES BOOK PRIZE

--First graphic novel since 1992's MAUS to make the list--

Top Shelf Productions is bursting with pride to announce that Nate Powell's graphic novel SWALLOW ME WHOLE has been nominated for the Los Angeles Times Book Prize!

SWALLOW ME WHOLE is one of five official finalists in the category of Young Adult Fiction, making it the first graphic novel to be nominated for this prize, in any category, since Art Spiegelman's MAUS won the Fiction category in 1992! "I'm honored just to be considered," says Powell, "and feel dizzy having my book even placed in the same sentence as MAUS."

Although SWALLOW ME WHOLE was not created exclusively for young adult readers, it is fundamentally a story about the dark, quiet corners of adolescence. The book follows two teenage stepsiblings, Ruth and Perry, through the ups and downs of school, family, and suburban restlessness -- all complicated by the insect armies, swirling visions, and haunting voices that no one else can perceive.

"To be a young person is to be surrounded at all times by frightening transition and the terror of losing touch with a safe and familiar world," says Powell. "Sometimes the only salvation from that terror is in what a teenager can create for themselves."

The LA Times Book Prize nomination follows months of critical acclaim for SWALLOW ME WHOLE's rich storytelling and dazzling visuals, which have led some to call it "the best graphic novel since Craig Thompson's BLANKETS." Douglas Wolk wrote in the New York Times that "Powell's flowing, impressionistic artwork, with its ravenous expanses of negative space, swirls the reader's perspective through his characters' perceptions and back out again." The Onion's AV Club agreed that the book "achieves some stunning effects with the art and the lettering" and admired how "SWALLOW ME WHOLE captures the desperation of the clinically obsessed, and how from the right angle, it can look like genius." The book also received an Ignatz Award from the 2008 Small Press Expo.

"What makes this book so worthy of acclaim is the way it immerses the reader in the life and mindset of a gifted yet mentally ill teenager," proclaimed Walter M. Mayes, a middle school librarian and one of the members of the award committee. "To get a glimpse of what it must feel like to be inside such a head can be overpowering and disorienting upon first read, but when reread, the book offers such literary power that it is hard to deny, even if you don't totally 'get' what is happening. Teens will find this book compelling, weird, scary, and ultimately affirming."

Nate Powell will be attending Seattle's Emerald City ComiCon (April 4-5) and the SPACE Expo in Columbus, OH (April 18-19) before traveling to Los Angeles for the LA Times Book Prize ceremony on Friday, April 24. The ceremony serves as the kickoff for the LA Times Festival of Books (April 25-26), where Nate will be a special guest hosted by Hi De Ho Comics all weekend.

Top Shelf 2.0 is also hosting a new online comic by Nate Powell and Rachel Bormann, entitled "Cakewalk," at http://www.topshelfcomix.com/ts2.0.

The BUZZ is back!

Moonstone places the GREEN HORNET & KATO at the

scene of the crime in upcoming prose anthology series

Legendary crime fighters to make triumphant return!

Moonstone has announced plans to publish several original short story collections featuring radio, film, comic book and television heroes The Green Hornet and Kato.  The debut entry is expected to hit the streets by late 2009.

Bold newspaper publisher Britt Reid (the Green Hornet’s alter ego) along with his faithful valet and ally Kato have thrilled audiences with their daring adventures as they “hunt the biggest of all game, public enemies who try to destroy our America” ever since springing from the imaginations of George W. Trendle and Fran Striker in 1936.  Fans have longed for the green-masked crime fighter to once again match wits with and bring down the criminal underworld.

Like his fictional granduncle The Lone Ranger, The Green Hornet differs from other masked heroes because he is a wanted outlaw himself.  This is his ‘edge”, which enables him to effectively destroy crime from within. The Green Hornet and Kato stalk their prey from their sleek rolling arsenal known as the Black Beauty, whose high-pitched buzzing engine evokes the memorable “Flight of the Bumblebee” theme music that hailed each new radio and television episode.

“We’re obviously thrilled to add The Green Hornet to our stable of licensed properties,” said Moonstone publisher and The Green Hornet editor Joe Gentile.  “As a huge fan, I’ve dreamed of bringing back and adding to these great characters’ legacy.  It is an honor and a responsibility we take very seriously. I can’t wait to see the new crime fiction stories come in from the many talented authors we have lined up.”

The Hornet’s return has created quite a buzz among today’s top writers from mystery, suspense, science fiction and pulp fiction.  Contributing authors include Harlan Ellison, Max Allan Collins, Ed Gorman, Mel Odom, Greg Cox, Will Murray, Ron Marz and scores more!  Actor Van Williams, who starred in the 1960’s television show along with expert martial artist Bruce Lee as Kato, will introduce the first prose volume.

Moonstone tapped acclaimed former Disney artist Rubén Procopio, now principal of Masked Avenger Studios, to art direct and contribute cover art and interior illustrations for each volume.  “It’s a dream project to explore new facets of one of my all-time favorite masked heroes… and ‘protect the rights and lives of decent citizens!’” said Procopio, recalling a memorable line from the television show.

RETAILER TIPS: ARE YOU TOASTING

YOURSELF? OR ARE YOU JUST TOAST?

Have you been waking up and immediately starting to think of ways to maim yourself instead of going into work? Does your stomach turn into knots at the mere opening of your email?

We have all had less than perfect jobs where these feelings took over our lives, but what happens when you feel this way and you are the boss? Self employed life is far from stress free. Burnout can become a living hell for the business owner with no end in sight. What follows are some helpful realistic hints from the pros and, well, those of us who have been there too.

1. YOU HAVE TO DEAL WITH THIS NOW AND IT REALLY CAN’T WAIT. Sorry Charlie, you have pushed your luck as absolutely as far as you can go. If you think you are burned out, then you probably are. You can’t put off dealing with this; it’ll only make matters worse. Stop kidding yourself. It’s not a phase. It’s not going to go away on its own. You are hurting yourself, and potentially your business and your family. Take care of yourself now!

2. RECONNECTING WITH YOU. The 12-hour days aren’t going to go away and neither are the bills or the rent. Make time in your day for at least one thing you truly enjoy. That part-timer really can handle the store without you. Go in the storeroom lock the door and eat Jell-o (or something else non-alcoholic) and read. Or just sit. You have to do something for you everyday and it can’t get shoved aside. And be nice to yourself; stop the negative voice in your head saying you could be doing more or better. If you could get to this point in life any other way you would have. Talk to yourself like you would a friend.

3. EXERCISE. Nature’s picker-upper. If you have to combine #2 and #3 so be it. Close the store, walk around the block for a half hour. Work out before or after work. If you have a large back room, get some dumbbells or better yet hang a heavy bag in the back -- stress relief and a workout all in one.

4. DON’T CHOKE WHEN YOU START LAUGHING -- VACATION! (Yes, the “V” word. I am working on this one myself, by the way.) When was the last time you really did go away? Now we both know that your stomach lining would turn to mush if you tried to go away for a full week. How about a long weekend? Even little breaks give you somewhat of a respite that you desperately need.

Here’s the deal. Your family and friends miss who you used to be. You probably do too. The solution to dealing with your job is NOT putting in those “couple more hours” that will finally get you caught up. Following the above hints will at least help get you back on the path to being effective when you are at work and not just, well, “there."
