HAVEN DISTRO
UPDATE |
Sponsored By: |
|
Hey guys.
Hope everyone had a great FCBD.
Sorry we missed April's newsletter, but
we were so focused on getting our first
issue of COMICS! ready that it
completely slipped by us. I think
everyone who sees it will agree that it
was worth the extra time put in. In
case you missed the new look and details
about this new book, check out our
website.
http://havendistro.com/catalog.html
It's at the printers now and will arrive
in stores over the course of May. If
you have placed an order or even set up
a new account with Haven since last
year, you are on the mailing list to get
one free. If you want more for your
customers, they are available for
wholesale through our store. If you
want to make sure that you get one, let
us know.
We are also going to be offering the
catalog for FREE online. We'll have the
pages saved on our website in PDF, CBZ,
and in a web-comic reader for easy
reading online if you don't want to
download 20 meg. So for any publishers
considering advertising, you'll get even
more exposure for your products in the
catalog, between print circulation and
web traffic. Keep an eye on the site
for it.
Sonic and
Futurama are both in, with
reorders for both already placed. Thanks
to everyone for their enthusiastic
response on those.
Beyond the
staple books that keep us all in
business, part of my mission with this
company is to raise awareness of a whole
slew of
high quality publishers that you
may have never heard of before, or maybe
you heard of but you never really took a
serious look at.
I'm looking over this newsletter and I
find myself amazed by the quality that
independent companies are turning out
these days. When you hear your customers
lamenting the sad state of their once
favorite comic book universes as they
are sucked further down into crossover
event hell... tell them about the mind blowing
books being turned out by companies like Com.X, Transfuzion, Bloodfire, Red 5,
Markosia, Ape Entertainment...
Turns out I picked a fantastic time to
get into this business.

PUBLISHER
SPOTLIGHT |

Transfuzion is a collaborative
entity created by
Gary Reed.and
Rafael Nieves. Gary and Rafael
have extensive experience in the
comics field, both with writing
comics and in the field of
publishing. Gary was the publisher
of Caliber Comics, a publishing
house that released over 1,300
comics in the 1990's. He also was
publisher of Stabur Press which
published books for specialty
markets and the bookstore market. In
addition, he was the vice-president
of McFarlane Toys when that company
launched its line of toys based on
Todd McFarlane's Spawn. Rafael was
involved in Comico and was one of
the founders of Moonstone Books. He
has also been part of a number of
studio development teams and comic
associations.
Transfuzion
began as a collaborative group of
writers seeking to pool their
resources and establish a base to
recruit new talent for the many
projects that all writers have
swirling around their heads. There
were a few successes from that
initial idea but more and more, the
writers felt that some of their past
work had merit and was available to
attract new readers.
Thus,
Transfuzion Studios turned into
Transfuzion Publishing. We're not a
traditional comic publisher that
follows the format of getting a few
pages together, offer the title to
retailers via Diamond and then print
when the orders come in. Instead,
we are printing the books first and
making them available. As so many
of the titles from Transfuzion are
collections of independent comics,
it is feasible that orders via the
comic stores will be low.
Therefore, we have taken the
strategy of doing low print runs,
some print on demand, and some will
be available as web comics. There
is no single method that will work
with each title.
In
regards to availability of the
titles, we will, of course, make
them available on this website and
the majority of the creators
involved with Transfuzion will have
them on their websites as well as at
conventions. They will also be
available at many online stores such
as Amazon and eventual storefronts
will be set up on eBay and other
related services. As for the
"comics market", which consists of
comic stores and Diamond, we
certainly do not intend to ignore
that segment. We will make titles
available to stores directly and on
some titles, they will be offered to
Diamond. Each title will be
positioned based on its potential
salability.
Transfuzion will also not be limited
to reprints only. There will be new
projects coming out as well but the
reprint material will make up the
bulk of the initial releases just
because there is less work involved.
We aren't going to make any
grandiose statements about what
we're doing. We think it's rather
simple...just putting together some
good books.
As
for who Transfuzion is, well, its
quite a few of us. It isn't limited
to the names you see in the early
launches and is certainly open to
more creators. We feel Transfuzion
is a work of evolution in progress
and we look forward to seeing how
"we" develop in the years to come.
In
July of 2008, Transfuzion teamed up
with Mark and Melissa Ellis and
their Millennial Concepts to offer
even more great collections
including material based on H.P.
Lovecraft, Sherlock Holmes, the
Justice Machine and more.

|
SAN DIEGO-
Ape Entertainment (APE) in cooperation
with Haven distribution has announced an
exclusive, limited edition cover for Ape
Entertainment’s next mini-series,
Sullengrey: Sacrifice, starting in
September 2009.
“We are
happy to be offering this exclusive
cover on Sullengrey’s new first
issue through Haven Distribution. It’s a
simple way for us to treat fans to
something special and give our retail
partners additional ways to sell our
product.” explains Ape Entertainment
Co-Publisher, David Hedgecock.
Sullengrey is
the story of the town of Autumn’s Grove
and the cast of characters that live
(and often die) there. In Sullengrey:
Sacrifice, our favorite cast of
characters return with new friends and
new foes and new levels of horrific
excitement. Salam Jones comes home to
find her boyfriend eviscerated and a
little girl and her missing dog are the
only keys to the nightmare lurking under
her roof! Also, the promoter of the
spookiest club in Autumn’s Grove learns
that living in a town that ignores its
fears is always a dangerous
proposition!
Drew Rausch (Cthulhu Tales, The Dark
Goodbye, Haunted Mansion) and Jocelyn
Gajeway present a chilling coming-of-age
story perfect for true horror fans.
Sullengrey: Sacrifice

issues of the mini-series are complete
and print ready. Sullengrey:

the Month! |
In
the May 2009 issue of Comic Buyer's
Guide (#1653), Planet Saturday
Comics Vol. 1 was picked as the Indy
Pick of the Month and was given a
wonderful review in the "Tour of the
Indies" Reviews section.
"The
first collection of the strip seems
expensive, considering that it's
black and white on non-glossy paper,
but most buyers will get their
money's worth of belly laughs out of
this."
Planet
Saturday Comics Vol. 1 is 91 pages,
black & white, and retails for
$12.95. It is a collection of the
webcomic strip of the same name by
writer/artist Monty S. Kane.

Interview with Kevin
Hanna

This month, Arcana's
Vice President of
Operations, Mark Poulton
interviews Clockwork
Girl co-creator, Kevin
Hanna.
MP:
Kevin, would you mind
telling people a little
about your background at
Disney?
KH: I was
at
Disney Interactive
Studios as Art
Director working on
video games. I've worked
on Narnia, Meet
The Robinsons,
Chicken Little,
Enchanted and dozens of
others. Currently I'm
working with
Jeff Matsuda
(Producer of TV's "The
Batman") and
several other talented
individuals at X-Ray
Kid, a start-up video
game/entertainment
company. Check us out at
www.x-raykid.com
MP: Was
comics something you
always thought you
wanted to try your hand
at?
KH:
I've been making comics
since 4th grade, and I'm
just now getting around
to showing them to other
people. It's been
fantastic taking what
I've learned in about
storytelling in video
games and animation and
applying them to comics.
Comic Books are
something I have been
passionate about for a
long time and it's great
to finally put that
passion into practice.
MP: How
did tthe project
Clockwork Girl with Sean
O'Reilly come about?
KH:
Sean saw my table at
Emerald City Comicon
and my image of the 3d
Tinker caught his eye.
Sean and I have been
working together in one
form or another ever
since. Clockwork Girl
was the first project we
discussed, and the one
we finally got around to
doing. Sean basically
said, "we need to do
something with that
guy!" and I started a
concept, passed it back
to Sean, who fleshed it
out, and we've been
passing ideas back and
forth ever since.
Sean and
I are both parents and
the idea of an all-ages
book that didn't talk
down to children or
adults resonated with us
both. This is something
we wanted to do, and
wanted to do right.
MP: Are
there plans for more
Clockwork Girl?
KH:
Originally, there were
no immediate plans to do
any sequels, I'm a big
fan of stories that have
a beginning, middle and
end, but after a year of
growing the world and
characters, I'm having a
hard time saying
goodbye. I think we'll
be seeing more of
Huxley, Tesla, The
Tinkerer and
Dendrus in one form or
another very soon.
MP:
Speaking of more
Clockwork Girl, how is
the animated movie
coming along?
KH: I'm
not sure how much I can
say, other than I am
thrilled that things are
going as well as I ever
hoped they could be.
Working in Hollywood, I
know that adaptations
are a gamble that often
taint the source
material. So far
everything is going
right with Clockwork
Girl, the people
involved really
understand the spirit of
the book and the
characters. I think fans
of the book will be very
happy with where this
ends up.
MP: Do
you have any other comic
projects in the works?
KH: I'm
publishing Barnaby
Ward's magnum opus
"Sixteen Miles to
Merricks" as a 200+ page
graphic novel and it's
being very well
received. Check out a 24
page preview online at
frogchildren.com
And expect something new
from Sean O'Reilly and
myself in the near
future.
MP: Any
last words for fans?
KH:
Thanks to everyone
reading the book, and
the over all great
response. Thanks!

Lazerman
Exclusive at WW Philly

"LAZERMAN"
Exclusive comes to Wizard
World Philadelphia
Boston Indy HBComics
produces
"Lazerman: Double-Size"
Exclusive for Convention
June
19-21, in Philadelphia,
"Wizard World" is coming to
the PennsylvaniaConvention
Center. And so is "Lazerman."
"Lazerman", the
flagship title for Boston
based indy comic creators
Chris and Alan Hebert, will
be getting a special
printing just for the Philly
Wizard World convention.
Called "LAZERMAN:
Double-Size", the issue
boasts almost 50 pages of
full color story, and
presents the first two
complete issues of the "Lazerman"
comic book title in one
book.
"It's the perfect
introduction to Lazerman,
and half of the 'This MAN,
This LAZER!' story arc!"
Chris Hebert wrote on
HBComics' Myspace blog. The
other two issues in the
initial four issue arc will
also be available at the
Hebert Brother's artist
alley table at Wizard World.
Lazerman
is the story of an awkward
comic book geek who, in a
bizarre twist of fate, ends
up with super-powers of his
very own. The title promises
to lovingly satirize the
super hero genre, while at
the same time provide a
light hearted hero story in
the tradition of classic
silver age comics. The first
three issues were released
earlier this year, and are
available through HAVEN
Distributors, (www.havendistro.com),
with the fourth issue coming
in the last week of May.
Lazerman's previous
"convention exclusive
variant" was at the now
defunct Wizard World Texas,
where the book sold out its
exclusive convention
printing.

Secret

Great
interview featuring Jeff Yang,
editor-in-chief:
http://abcnews.go.com/video/playerIndex?id=7344986
Title:
Secret Identities: The
Asian American Superhero
Anthology
ISBN:
9781595583987
Price/Format: $21.95/TP
On
Sale: 3/24/09
Publisher:
The New Press
What if we told you a tale about a
quiet, unassuming guy with black hair
and thick glasses; an immigrant, who’s
done his best to fit into a world that
isn’t his? Many Asian Americans fit that
bill. But so does Clark Kent, better
known to the world as Superman.
—The editors of Secret Identities
Appealing to both comics fans and Asian
Americans seeking to claim their place
in American culture, Secret Identities
makes brilliant use of the conventions
of the superhero comic book to expose
the real face of the Asian American
experience.
This groundbreaking graphic anthology
brings together leading Asian American
creators in the comics
industry—including Gene Yang (National
Book Award finalist for American Born
Chinese), Bernard Chang (Wonder Woman),
Greg Pak (The Hulk), and Christine
Norrie (Black Canary Wedding Special)—to
craft original graphical short stories
set in a compelling “shadow history” of
our country: from the building of the
railroads to the Japanese American
internment, the Vietnam airlift, the
murder of Vincent Chin, and the
incarceration of Dr. Wen Ho Lee.
Entertaining and enlightening, Secret
Identities offers whiz-bang action,
searing satire, and thoughtful
commentary from a community too often
overlooked by the cultural mainstream,
while showcasing a vivid cross-section
of the talents whose imagination and
creativity is driving the contemporary
comics renaissance.

RETAILER TIPS:
BE A LEADER VS. BEING THE BOSS |
|
You’ve
yelled. You have demoted. You have told
them that business is bad and that they
need to step up or people are going to
start losing jobs.
Yet nothing
changes.
You are starting to wonder if you speak
a different language. You don’t
understand why your staff isn’t working
overtime to save their jobs. They come
in and do their jobs to the letter of
the description and no more. Every
month, your stomach lining is
disappearing and you feel like your
trying to row the boat all by yourself.
You scream orders and it’s almost like
they start to move slower. The problem
is motivation and direction. And you
need some before you can point them in
the right direction. When looking to
lead others, there are three things that
you need to look at it regardless of the
state of your business : clear
consistent communication, empathy, and
realistic urgency.
