HAVEN DISTRO
UPDATE |
|
Good news!
The move to the new warehouse is done...
well about as done as it's gonna get
when there's still orders to get out the
door. Our new space is much bigger.
All the books are up and ready to be
pulled. We're not quite ready for
walk-in browsing yet, but I expect to be
there soon. Between the new inventory
layout and some new warehouse help, the
whole operation is moving at a much
nicer pace.
More good news! The Enemi catalog is at
the mailing center. Stores should
expect to see them over the course of
the next two weeks, depending on your
distance from
New York. If you don't get one
by the end of the month, let me know and
I'll make sure you get a copy and get on
the mailing list for the next one.
Specials:
Our remaining stock of
Ape Entertainment has been added
to the clearance racks. 60% off. |

January of 2007, Alterna Comics is a
creator-owned graphic novel company that
supports the right for creators to keep

of USA Book News 2008 National "Best
Books" Award
|
Dallas, TX
–
USABookNews.com,
the
premiere online magazine
and review website for
mainstream and
independent publishing houses,
announced the winners and
finalists of
THE 2008 NATIONAL "BEST BOOKS"
AWARDS, (NBBA)
on October 20, 2008. Robert
James Luedke's, Eye Witness:
Rise of the Apostle, (Head
Press Publishing, 2008), was
honored as the Winner in the
category of Comics:
Graphic
Novels.
Luedke
created the Eye Witness series,
(
http://www.headpress.info
), as a way to share the
spiritual, historical and
dramatic nature of the Bible, in
a way that is both attractive
and entertaining...especially to
teen and young adult readers,
who may not attend church or
read the Bible, but are avid
readers of comics, manga and
graphic novels. His unique
combination of a Biblical
adaptation with a modern day
action-thriller has proven
successful not only in comic
outlets, but also with
mainstream and Christian
booksellers.
This is the third major book
award that Luedke's Eye Witness
series has garnered. In 2007
the second book in the Tetra
logy, Eye Witness: Acts of
the Spirit, was a winner at
the
Hollywood Book Festival
(in the category of
comics/graphic novels) and a
silver medalist at The
Independent Publisher Awards
(in the category of Dramatic
Graphic Novels).
Jeff Keen, President and CEO of
USABookNews.com, said this

Interview
with Koni Waves and Velvet Rope's
Stephen Sistilli
This month, Arcana's VP of Operations,
Mark Poulton, interviews Koni Waves
artist and co-creator, Stephen Sistilli.
MP:
Steve, can you give us some of your art
background, where you went to school,
how you got started, past jobs, etc.?
SS:
I had no formal training although I took
art classes in college at SUNY
Binghamton. My father however, is an
artist and he guided me and encouraged
me as I grew up. I've been doing graphic
arts for advertising including marker
comps, illustration and storyboards for
over 25 years.
MP:
Were you a
comic book
fan growing up? If so,
what were some of your favorites?
SS:
I liked and collected a variety of
stuff. The DC war titles, Classic
Illustrated, Gold Key -
Dell TV/movie tie-ins, Mad
magazine and humor titles like
Jerry Lewis,
and superheroes like the Metal Men and
Spider-Man. I was a huge
fan of the Warren titles (Creepy, Eerie,
and
Vampirella).
MP:
Was drawing comic books something you
always wanted to do?
SS:
Every kid who liked art and drew in the
margins of their school notebooks had
teh desire to draw comics. I was no
different.
MP:
Who are some of your artistic
influences?
SS:
Comic art influences are
Al Williamson, Neal Adams,
John Romita Sr,
Jim
Holdaway, and
Jose
Gonzalez. Illustration
influences are Bob McGinnis,
Frank
McCarthy, Enrich,
Howard
Terpning, and George
Wilson.
MP:
You're penciling a short story for the
upcoming Velvet Rope anthology called
Daddy's Little Girl? What can you tell
us about DLG?
SS:
Daddy's Little Girl is about a character
with a secret occupation. Those
double-life stories have always
fascinated me. The "girl" is Bryn
Tilton, who is a rich party girl who
plays with her family fortune in the
nightclubs and VIP rooms in
Atlantic
City. Unknown to most
however, she's also the gatekeeper of a
secret morgue of monsters, trying to
determine the fate and whereabouts of
her real biological father while dealing
with the forces of the netherworld as
tehy intermingle with the unrealities of
the seaside gambling mecca. Everything
that happens in Vegas might stay in
Vegas, but nothing is what it seems in
AC!
MP:
Koni Waves, Velvet Rope, and now Daddy's
Little Girl. You have a knack for
drawing beautiful women. When designing
these characters how do you go about
coming up with their looks?
SS:
I let stories and personalities
determine their look. I run the gamut
from the sexy/boozy type like Koni to
the perky tanned blonde of Bryn to the
hot/dead (not an oxymoron; I see it on
the streets all the time!) look of miss
Velvet, the living-challenged main usher
of the Velvet Rope anthology.

Bluewater Inks Deal With Lionsgate for
Comic Series |

In
2009, Bluewater and Lionsgate will
be developing a line of comic books
based on the cult/ horror favorite
films “Leprechaun” and “Warlock”.
After their successful series
“Vincent Price Presents” Bluewater
delivers more horror to comics.
“Working with Lionsgate on this end
is like coming back full circle for
me. I worked on the marketing for
“Leprechaun 4: In Space”, said
Bluewater publisher Darren G. Davis.
“I loved this little character and
have always wanted to do something
with him. As for “Warlock”, this was
another cult film that I enjoyed, so
having this opportunity to partner
with Lionsgate again is going to
great”.
The “Warlock comic series is
described as, The Warlock is on a
mission to destroy a book that
contains a spell which imprisoned
six other Warlocks. If the book
manages to be destroyed, the
dangerous Warlocks would be released
back into the world free to cause
chaos and destruction. It's up to a
rag-tag group of people to prevent
the Warlock from carrying out his
plan.
"Warlock will appeal to both fans of
the franchise and readers who know
nothing about the horror series”,
said writer Nick Lyons. The book
will be drawn by Jacob Bear and
colored by John Hunt. Matt Bellisle
will be doing all the alternate
covers to this title.
“Leprechaun”
will be written by another Lionsgate
alum Zach Hunchar, who just finished
writing Insane Jane for Bluewater.
“Leprechaun” is an immensely popular
horror franchise and I’m excited
about expanding the mythos. It takes
two of my favorite things … Ireland
and horror. I’m extremely excited to
continue to explore the things that
scare me and entertain me. I’m very
happy Bluewater chose me for this
task.”
“Leprechaun” the comic series is a
tale of revenge and mayhem. This is
the tale of Lubdan, the king and
sole survivor of the Leprechaun. The
last of the Leprechauns! A treasure
dealer stumbles across his pot of
gold and steals it. In this modern
age, he finds buyers all over the
planet through on-line auctions.
Iubdan finds the thief after the
gold is shipped to humans across the
globe. Unbeknownst to Iubdan, the
Cluracan, a war-like race intent on
genocide, helped the human find the
gold. A new curse is discovered that
weakens Iubdan while he is not in
possession of the gold and will
eventually kill him if he does not
recover them all in enough time. He
quickly realizes he cannot locate
the gold without help. The treasure
dealer’s last sale was to a computer
expert, who agrees to help Lubdan,
in exchange for his life. Together,
they race against time to learn of
the gold’s locations. Lubdan’s quest
takes him all over the planet,
across time and space. Battling
greed, the genocidal Cluracan and
new mystical adversaries, Lubdan
must save all life to save himself.
Kris Carter will draw “Leprechaun”.
And Micheal Kingston will be writing
the 2nd story arch.

Newsarama Reviews "the Experts" |
YOUR
INDY WEEKLY: THE EXPERTS
by Ryan McLelland
The Experts #1 and 2
Near Mint Press - $3.00 each
Written by: Kenn Minter
Illustrated by: Clarence Pruitt
Website:
http://www.kennminter.com
Rating: 4 stars (of 4)
With Kenn Minter’s The Experts
you get a feeling that this
superteam is called The Experts
just like you call a big guy
‘Tiny’. But when you put
together a team with old pros
like Emerald Yeti and Doctor
Delta with such nuebs as Ninja
Witch, Free Mary, and the very
dressed Naked Man one cannot
expect to be as great as the
Avengers, the JLA, or even the
Great Lakes Avengers. Inanity
runs rampant in this superb
series that highlights what
those who think they are great
do in incredible situations…even
if they aren’t that great.
The first issue features a trio
of stories that introduces the
newest team of Experts and also
a shrink that caters to the
problems of superhero and
villain alike. The best story
features IncredoLad – a youth in
a small town that wears glasses
and a bowl-cut ala Guy Gardner
to preserve his secret identity.
However everyone in this quiet
town already knows that the
unnamed teen is also the
superhero IncredoLad.
The comedy moves forward when
young Tina Tang falls into the
river and starts drowning. All
would have been fine with ol’
bowlcut running off to become
IncredoLad to save the day
except that Chet has to come
over and provoke IncredoLad.
Chet tells him to hurry and save
Tina while IncredoLad defends
everything from his eyeglasses,
his bowlcut, and even a leg
brace that appears out of
nowhere that all but proves he
CANNOT be IncredoLad. By the
time he comes up with an excuse
to get away from Chet (Chet and
Tina’s friends all know he is
going to change into his
costume), IncredoLad runs into
the woods, takes off his
sweater, and finds that he left
his costume at home. The
situations get worse and worse
as the reader gets a sinking
feeling that Tina better learn
to swim very quickly.
Issue two focuses more on The
Experts themselves, namely Ninja
Witch and Free Mary who are
forced to take down the evil
telepath Silver Muse. It seems
that Silver Muse is able to
control the minds of men and
therefore only Ninja Witch and
Free Mary can save the day. Not
only that, the Experts’ leader
Frost Queen points out, but the
duo’s action figures (with
exceptionally quality boobs!)
are the lowest selling of the
entire Experts line, so the two
have to get out there more,
fight more crime, thus causing
more kids to want to go out and
buy more of their toys. The two
are off to fight Silver Muse,
but the cattiness of two gals
going to fight some evil bitch
makes the comic sillier and
better as it goes along.
Somewhat reminiscent of Bob
Burden’s Mystery Men but with a
devilishly sharp wit, The
Experts is a perfect indy book
that continues to throw pleasure
at you page after page. From
Clarence Pruitt’s sharp pencils
to Minter’s ability to hit
everything what would be wrong
with every young superhero in
the world, the Experts is truly
a fun read that is destined to
become a fave of every indy
comic reader. It’s fun and it
makes fun of all we behold, from
masks to breasts to hopefully
learning one day what Naked
Man’s powers exactly are. The
Experts is one book that indy
readers should not miss.

Lazerman
Sells Out at Wizard World Texas |
From the LazerBlog:
Hey
ALL! Chris here, coming off an AMAZING
week of conventions...
As you guys may know, we started in our
hometown with the BOSTON COMICON. We
went into this not knowing exactly what
to think, we weren't able to make it to
the con in previous years. Well, we
actually had an amazing time, met alot
of really cool folks and sold an awful
lot of comics. For a one day con, it was
really successful for us. We walked out
of there thinking we weren't likely to
do much better at Texas....
Man were WE wrong.
Friday morning we met one of the coolest
people I'm ever likely to meet: Kate
Napolitano, managing editor of Toyfare
Magazine. Not only is she a truck and a
half load of fun, but it turns out she
really digs Lazerman. Luckily for us,
she would not be the ONLY one that
weekend who liked the book....
We are thrilled to report we completely
sold out of the Lazerman Wizard World
TEXAS exclusive!! Actually we didn't
have that many of ANY of our comics left
by Sunday evening. Now THATS what I
call a good show.
It wasn't just how many we sold...it was
how many people who came by on the
second and third day to tell us they
LOVED the book! Not to mention the other
artists who stopped by to tell us they
had been "hearing" about Lazerman all
weekend, and the we had a "great
buzz"going on for the book.
A HUGE thank you to those who picked up
the book, and who made the great time we
had possible. Honestly despite how
excited and pumped we are right now, we
are also truley humbled by the response.
In fact, we received an email from a 7
year old kid whose parents bought him
the first two issues the night
before...he told us how much he loved
the book, and asked us to make "265
more." Next to his name, he signed it "A
Lazerman fan."

If we have anything to say about, we're
granting that request buddy.

RETAILER TIPS:
HOLIDAY SEASON 2008 - THE WAR HAS BEGUN |
|
The article
in this
link basically details what you
already know, people are scared to shop.
Many folks just don't have much cash
and those that do are afraid to fall
into the previous category. So what's a
retailer to do?
A) Remind people that comics, books,
etc. are cheap entertainment in
comparison to going to a movie.
Rereading value plays in too.
B) Holidays mean gifts for kids.
Make sure the items in your store that
are kid friendly are prominently
displayed.
C) Good Customer service. The bad
experience in the best of times may be
be blown off by a customer as your store
having a bad day. Now, that's reason
enough to go somewhere else.
D) Get creative. More people through
your store means more chance that
someone will buy something.
Instead of sending back your damage
trades create a lending library. People
have to sign out books with your
approval and have x amount of days to
bring them back. Those that can't
afford to buy right now still have a
reason to use your store.
Guaranteed, when they have the cash they
are going to be buying from you and no
one else.
E) Don't, and I mean DON'T skimp on the
marketing. First thing in this economy
budget wise to go is promotions.
However, the retail market is blood and
knives cutthroat. Early
Black Friday sales have already
begun and to not keep tooting your own
horn right now is lethal. You have to
work twice as hard to get people's
attention and three times as hard to
keep it.
F) Breathe. You can get through
this rough time. Your store will
be stronger for it and your customer
base will be loyal as apostles when you
cater even more to them in this trying
time.
